The problem is the referee saw it as an elbow to the head, clearly indicated by his signal and has ben said you can hear him say the same on commentary. If one of your players is elbowed to the head, would you want the transgressor to remain on the pitch? According to the MRP the referee got it wrong in the eyes of the MRP, much as he did sinbinning a player for a classic cannonball tackle.
I remember the Mills on Ashurst slightly differently. I was in the front of the stands with my dad, about 20 yards fron the action. Ashurst was tackled by a Widnes player a lying on his front. Mills was kneeling near his head and repeatedly gave him a barrage of about 5 blows to his head which shot backwards each time. It was absolutely vicious. It was horrible and I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Ashurst was unconscious and carried off on a stretcher and Mills was sent off immediately.
Made Cassidy seem like a pussycat!
I remember one at Central Park. I think it was Jeff Grayshon. He calmly walked out of the defensive line, floored a Wigan player then walked off the pitch before the ref had a chance to show him the red card.
I remember standing in the crowd thinking wtf just happened.

A couple of years ago I was in a bar in Tenerife (Tanyo's) and got chatting to a bloke in a Workington vest. Turned out he was an ex player - Billy Pattinson (just before my time) who told us in great detail how Bill Ashurst's elbow had broken his jaw.
