Quote: jaws1 "It cost us so much that we had to leave Central Park we payed our players too much money .Budget was that we won the CC when we lost to Salford and stopped the run we were in deficit with the players wages and had to sell the ground.'"
The building of the new stand and its subsequent spiraling costs due to piling issues underground and the club having to pour an additional hundreds of thousands of pounds into the project took us to the edge.
Unfortunately we were a victim of bad timing too:
Tesco were searching for a new plot in the town centre.
Crowds were down on years previous.
Maurice had recently left the club.
The DW was being built by Whelan as the Latics were to move away from Springfield Park.
Take those four instances away and we probably would have stayed where we were. Probably with a new board, maybe even Lenagan would still have bought us? We may have even upgraded Central Park bit by bit over the last twenty years (similar to Leeds have done).
But it wasn't to be which is a shame.
