I grew up playing mostly against Sam but with him for a few representative sides like the old Wigan Service Area and Lancashire at youth level and weirdly enough with him for St Pats U18s at a 0-0 draw away at Golborne, he went for a drop goal that day and the ball just stuck in the mud. Referee gave a KO
He’s always had a cockiness about him. It just came naturally to him. I always found him like you to be quite pleasant mostly but he was what you’d call a f*****g p***k to play against, grubby and giving it the big I am verbals throughout. I don’t think I’ve seen him when he’s had a few cans, once we went our separate and respective clubs at 18 we never kept in contact - not that we were close anyway mind.
Those traits though are what make him a good player IMO. That natural cockiness gives him the confidence to try things that are risky, a natural gob on a stick who isn’t afraid to say what he means and lead his team around the park even if he isn’t captain. I can see why though that some have had a bad experience with hun through those traits.
