Hastings is really key to this and out him, Field, Tommy & Smith he's the real king pin. He's difference between that been a perfect mix and one with real question marks over it.
We've been (rightly) throwing praise at Tommy, but like you said earlier he's been allowed to concentrate on his strengths. Him going back to being the dominant HB seems like a step back.
Field & Smith could both be either world-class, or not fullfil their potential. No one knows as they've not had a run. I'd be apprehensive if they were both our starting HB's in 2021.'"
If Hastings leaves then I think the time has come to throw Harry Smith the responsibility of kicking us around the field and organising the side, regardless of who us at the side of him. It’s his game and it plays to his strengths and would allow Field or Leuluai the opportunity to play as a running half.
In truth I’d probably give that responsibility to Harry Smith next season even if Hastings stays and pair them together. Hastings is doing a decent job at the minute with his kicking but it’s not the strongest part of his game and that freedom to roam and chance his arm, whilst Smith organises us would be a great balance. I really think we need to give Harry Smith more of a chance next season to cement a staring role. He’s lost his place this season on the back of probably his best performance of the year against Warrington. That was a bit strange for me and must’ve hurt him and whilst the results have been good since then, I don’t think they’d have been any different with him in. He’s lost his place to allow some props to get away with playing 15 minutes. I’d rather have that safety net of a back up half on the bench tbh.
