| When Manchester City did a badge redesign they did several and let the fans decide.
I vote for the Historical Coat of Arms. Would think that the majority of fans would to.
Put it to a fans vote. Give us our history badge back!

| Hipsters have won out sod history it seems.
Funny isn’t it they can get in touch when they need something such as donating your season ticket yet keep quiet over something that was bound to get peoples hackles up

| Quote christopher="christopher"Leeds fan here in peace.
My initial thoughts on your rebrand (I own a branding agency)
Been giving this some thought, lets take the actual design of the badge out of it for a moment, owning a branding agency I know as much as anyone how design is subjective.
The key thing for me is that the ‘Warriors’ brand hasn’t really worked for Wigan. And to look at it simply it hasn’t worked for 2 reasons. 1. They didn’t really embrace it from the start, look at a club (happens to be my club) The Leeds Rhinos, they fully embraced it from the start and ran with it, it caused a lot of controversy at the time but it has undoubtedly worked for them be cause they went all in at the start but this leads me onto my next point...
2. Wigan were successful at the time of the name changes, Wigan RL was already a strong brand and one that the supporters were proud of, Leeds were coming off the back of financial troubles and almost going bust, it was a perfect time for them to reinvent themselves, Wigan didn’t need to do this so the Warriors moniker was just a half hearted attempt to go along with what was happening.
Long story short I personally think the braver bold decision here would have been to actually drop the name Warriors from the name and go ‘all in’ with branding themselves Wigan RL. There are many examples of redesigns of older badges which look both modern yet traditional and they could have got round the cost of reproduction with s well designed crest.
Nobody really calls Wigan the Warriors in the same way as say Leeds Rhinos are known as the Rhinos, maybe that’s their thinking but I think its too late and has shown by the reaction not what the fans actually want.
Wakefield has done this recently (on a much smaller scale and IMO not 100% correctly) but I believe it resonated well with fans and merchandise sales are up.
To then bang on about tradition and release a cherry and black shirt with the new crest just seems like a total mis step.
So in my professional opinion, they’ve got this whole rebrand badly wrong.'"
Nail and head for me. I actually like the crest with the castle and crown, the ‘warrior’ gimmick is something I’ve never really been a huge fan of (irrespective of my poster name).
I’m all for moving forward, we have to as a club and a sport but there’s a way to do it that incorporates both tradition and the new age. Changing the badge to that monstrosity and changing the colours to red and black does neither but p!55 off most fans.

Some fans were included in the review I think from the very beginning
Not sure how much sway they had (probably none) but the club could argue they did include the fans in the decision
From KR video this appears to be IL’s decision
I think IL will keep his head down on this and ride out the storm

| Radlinski galore on the club website trying to justify the reasons for the change of the badge.
He should remember as a former player that when Maurice Lindsay was Chairman, he said that supporters should be proud to wear any clothing with the traditional Ancient and Loyal coat of arms badge on it.
He and the others members of the gang of four did not need to change a badge to get younger people to support the club, they just provided the best players they could sign and put on the field for supporters of all ages to watch.

He has to (for the next 12 months anyway) as they've got a load of training kit with the new badge on there.
I don't think I've seen a more negative reaction to anything the club have done.

| Grown men arguing and venting on social media is probably more embarrassing than the badge itself.

Perhaps they should have consulted you about its design.'"
Can't take credit for that I'm afraid, but I have said for years we should market the castle aspect of the crest (and we did briefly)
I know someone who was consulted on this and I trust them 100% to have done the right thing. Their comments would indicate the club didn't really care what fans said.

| A lot of the more hysterical comments online seem to come from people who simply don't like change. No brand ever stays the same so I don't inherently have an issue with it I just think the design itself is really poor and doesn't really feel like a Wigan badge. The one in Egg Chasing's picture is a great logo - it's different, new but still distils the brand identity into it. I'm really surprised that a professional has taken money for the current design.
Then we get to the whole projecting it onto rival's stadiums. Crass and vulgar, especially when you're projecting that logo onto it...

How's that different to grown men venting on here?
I personally think social media has done more harm to society than good, but it is what it is and certainly isn't going away. In many instances, if you don't use any social platforms then you don't get a say. A lot of decisions are made off the back of the reactions on social platforms.

| I’ve calmed down now after the initial shock. I think the reasons behind it are totally acceptable and whilst I think the design should’ve been much better, it’s done now and I doubt we’ll change it. Ultimately the club finds itself in a very strange time and it’s a tough time for everyone. I’ve spoken on here before about backing the club to the hilt regarding finances and saying if we didn’t sign anybody then so be it. I think the financial aspect has played a part in this but when you see what the club has done from a signing and resigning POV, I can’t be anything but chuffed with that. The badge matters little in the grand scheme of things and it certainly won’t be playing on my mind during games next season.
Overall whilst the design isn’t great, I can accept it’s been done with good intentions and we move on.
