Refs have always been blamed for all manner of ills in the game, for as long as the game has existed. If anyone has stopped following the game because of refereeing, they're a moron, but I doubt anyone has.

Twitter is a different level, threatening to kill someone is a criminal offence and should certainly not be ignored.
