He shouldn't have been having to kick or be the playmaker though. This is our point. Matty Smith went hiding and delegated his responsibility.

| Surely Ryan Hampshire can do what Smith brings to the team plus he has the bonus of pace, of which Smith has none.
Smith is just not good enough

| The teams evolving and growing and in my opinion a tough call needs to be made on Smith.
We've got the best young halfback pair in the last twenty years at the club and they need to play.

| We were having this discussion 6 months ago, saying SW had to give Rocky and George a chance to play together at 6 and 7. It has been a huge mistake by SW to persevere with a relatively ineffective Smith all season. Rocky has only played at 6 once all season - that was when Williams pulled up in the warm up to a game and he was drafted in at the last minute. They have never been given the chance to show what they can do together as a half-back partnership at SL level.
Burrows and McGuire ran the show for Leeds tonight - Burrows showed how effective he can be despite his lack of size and alleged weak defence. Rocky could be even more effective - and he has the priceless commodity of extreme pace, something Smith sadly lacks.
If SW wanted Smith to play it should have been as the bench 9 to spell Micky Mac.

| Smith is Mr consistent but lacks the ability to be spectacular.
If you analyse his career then his greatest game for Wigan was on a rain soaked day where he kicked Hull to death in the cup. After that can anyone name me other games where he's really shone? Tbf he's had decent runs of good form but he's not won us games or been the standout performer.
After 3.5 seasons at the club it's you'd hope he'd have more than one standout moment right?
The thing is, it's easy enough to replace him. We could go with Hampshire at 6 and GW at 7. That option requires zero recruitment and gives us Wigan produced halves!
If Hampshire isn't Wane's cup of tea then put Sam at 6 and recruit a new FB or give Bowen 12 more months. I'd argue FB is probably the easiest position to recruit for as good FB's are ten a penny in the NRL.

| He was ing awful tonight and IMO cost us the game, the knock on after our first try followed by kick after kick straight down Leeds players throats. Why we kept going to him for our 5th tackle plays I don't know.I think he's a decent pro but Williams/Hampshire is abetted partnership going forward.

| Waney won't play Hampshire in the halves so the only hope is he goes Tomkins at 6, Williams at 7 and Hampshire at 1. That trio would be devastating but I really doubt it'll happen.

| Does anybody else think he cost us that game?i don't like to blame individuals but I think his performance tonight was shocking and although not on a par with flowers last year was pretty bad.

| It all started in the 5th minute. If he hadn't dropped the ball from the restart and Wigan had then had a good set of 6 and put in a reasonable kick, it would have been a totally different game! All ifs and buts, though, but the fact remains Wigan had taken the lead but then let Leeds get straight back on level terms - primarily because Smith made a schoolboy error. Professional rugby players, particularly scrum halves, should not drop a ball from a kick off, particularly on a dry light evening. And his kicking was just poor - as it has been for the majority of the season. Rocky has to be a better alternative with George going to 7.
