It also allowed SKY to cut their transmission almost immediately after the penalty so that they were in time for #SNF Match Choice. Not being a conspiracy theorist (maybe I am ), but that game was not going into a second period of extra time to push back the footy...Flee in the ref's ear?
It was a pretty soft pen when you look at some of the challenges that went unpunished over the two games to date (or the challenges that warranted just a pen).
