| Quote: SuffolkCherryPie "I'm new to this forum and have been quite shocked at the perception of Wigan. Are we really a team of thugs? I know MM has done some pretty poor efforts and obviously Flower the other night, but I can't think of any other Thuggish acts this season. I've seen posts about our method of tackling, but if it's illegal, why would we be allowed to do it? Someone on the gloating thread said our style was boring. I've really enjoyed watching our attacking play this year, especially when you think we lost Sam this year. Most Tries, Most Points and Most Clean Breaks enough said. Most of you guys watch us every week, unlike me with only the televised games, hope you can enlighten me!'"
To be honest, the tags of thugs and boring are probably a bit harsh.
The boring is a reference to the structured game that Wigan play ........ some fans prefer a more fluid, off the cuff, improvised style, where the ball carrier takes a few more risks.
The thug tag is probably because of their physical and aggressive tackling style; and is pssibly also linked to Wigan having had some notorious "hard men" over the years (Goodway, Skerrett, Newton etc); it might even be older fans remembering when Shaun Wane was a player, and in an era when a lot of biff was accepted, he could dish it out with the best of them.

As could many others, and yet I don't see the multitude of threads slagging off Warrington (Boyd, Cullen, et al) or Widnes (Mills. Sorenson, Tamati, etc) or St. Helens (Nickle, Fogerty, etc).
People are all of a sudden fixated with Wigan about thuggery, just like they have forever been fixated with then through jealousy.

aboveusonlypie...
If you don't bother to go to the game when you live in the locality then you are not really a fan and therefore your views are invalid. It's simple.:icons39ad_files/4821-1859san_c-msnicons.jpg |

Took a cursory look at the stains board, i don't like to hang around there too long as it make me feel grubby, banned anyway.... But, i failed to notice a single thread about LH's cowardly attack to the jaw of "Mr Flower power", which came as no surprise whatsoever. I thought it might have deserved a thread, due to it being an action which merited a ban.

I think the tags more than probably a bit harsh. Who are the teams that play with this off the cuff style? Every team I see have a structured way of playing. We have players who take risks with ball in hands, Sarginson, Gelling, Burgess, Bowen and Green spring to mind. Our style suits our players or visa versa. We scored the most tries as a team, and many from longe range, that suggests we have more to our attacking game than just set plays.
As for the thug tag. Every club have had their fair share of hard men. Most could give it out and take it. Despite all the statistics, no one has proved that we are a team of thugs as was banded about after the Grand Final.
On my OP, i asked about our tackling technique, asking if it is illegal? I have looked at the stats for this season, we made 8053 tackles as a team. How many of our players have been found guilty of a Cannonball tackle?

Sorry mate, but i'm not going there. I won't go to St. Helens unless there is a game on, so I'm not going to the board either.
