he will play for England RU, not if. No one actually noticed or cared which domestic RU club he was to be allocated to. In fact, the thought of Bath providing a rival attraction to South Sydney is utterly laughable.

It doesn't say much for the Aviva clubs if they are nothing more than stepping stones for these guys. Though presumably they'll be beneficiaries of such - acquiring the services of RL stars who they evidently wouldn't get anywhere near without England RU's involvement - it says even less for them that they are happy to sit there and watch their domestic rivals be strengthened immeasurably through no efforts of their own (a hypothetical comparison would be if the RFL suddenly purchased Billy Slater, Greg Inglis and Cameron Smith and gave them to Bradford, Hull and Castleford, while the rest of us were told to accept it), never mind the subsequent shutting out of RU talent that has come up through the ranks.

The next question, therefore, is how to we remedy this? We can either sit back and hope it doesn't work out for the converts - as it didn't with Joel and probably won't with Kyle Eastmond - or we can take steps to bolster our own international game. I should quickly say that I don't know how we can realistically do that (so it's a good thing I'm not responsible for making the decisions), but as we are clearly tied to this "we won't pay them what they are worth" principle, we really must start seriously talking to the Aussies and Kiwis about recreating a vibrant international dimension in RL. More tournaments, more tours, and better marketing on all fronts - competitive ticket prices etc - so that we generate the kinds of crowds these guys deserve to be playing in front of.

I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted on this matter, and probably telling everyone something they already know. But this article - more than any other I've read in recent times - has enforced my belief that, without its international dimension, RU would be of genuine limited interest to our star players.

The trouble with the WCC is all the excitement is this side of the world only.

The insular Aussies see us as inferior and see it all as a waste of time.

One step should be having the WCC 2 weeks after the GF, so that players that won it are the same players that compete in it.

The aussies are insular about everything though, internationals or the club game. If rumours are to be believed they have scuppered the mooted GB tour next season and they didn't want to play internationals in 2012 which meant we got the awful European competition which saw 3 blow out scores and about 8,000 at Salford watching the final. At least with a WCC competition it would be the clubs who decided rather than the ARL, thought it would obviously have to funded somehow.

I agree ideally the WCC would be played at the end of the season, with same squads and coaches etc and with no disruption to either season. I don't think that would be taken too seriously either though because all they players would be too busy concentrating on celebrating their GF final win than they would on the upcoming WCC.

Even before I hit the floor I thought I'd broken my jaw, but the cheekbone was so depressed I couldn't move it Shaun Edwards Leeds Fan on Mobile phone at Headingley said: "Alright mate it's only me, no I'm just ringing to say there's thousands of Wigan Fans here. Thousands of 'em it's swarming with em". "no fooking $hit sherlock,Barrett got his willy out and pi$$ed all over us. True, but I think with it made an end of season comp, maybe in alternating hemispheres we (the top SL teams) would compete. We need to do it consistently over there. As Craig said the strength in RL is in the in game. We should focus on our strengths.

That sounds great until you think about the logistics of it. One team's fans will have bugger all chance of being able to save up and get over for the game, plus the clubs would probably want a bit more time to prepare. I suppose one way to do it would be to extend the WCC to the top x amount of teams rather than the GF winner, at least everyone gets a bit more preparation time that way

Quote: Eastbourne Warrior "Internationals is where RU are light years ahead of RL, it's where they get most of their money from too. They can play 'friendlies' in front of 80000 at twickenham where we struggled to get 25000 for World Cup games.

You can't blame players for wanting to play in that kind of arena.

I've been saying for a long time RL needs a set international calendar that we will stick to. We try concepts like the exiles for a couple of years and forget about it.

Everyone will have their own opinion of what we should do but I like the idea of introducing an RU style 5 nations. I think there is more chance of players that would be willing to play for Wales, Scotland and Ireland if they had regular fixtures. There is also more chance of clubs like the scorpions & crusaders being a success if their international team played regularly.

Without going into too much detail or giving it too much thought as to where fixtures would fit in
This. It constantly annoys me that we never know when or even what hemisphere England/GB will be playing next. We desperately need a set international calendar. At least we've got a set World Cup schedule now but I'd go with a set 4 year cycle of:
(All end of season comps)
Year 1 - 5 Nations in Southern Hemisphere (Eng, Aus, NZ & top 2 pacific Island nations)
Year 2 - Ashes Tour
Year 3 - 5 Nations in Northern Hemisphere (Eng, Aus, NZ & top 2 European nations)
Year 4 - World Cup

I don't see why that can't be done. Or something along similar lines anyway. But make it a set, definitive calendar. Not a "well we might do but we might not and then we'll just decide what's happening a few months beforehand". It's the only way we'll build interest. Both from spectators and sponsors.

I'd also have an annual mid-season 5 Nations both here and down under. I understand the arguments against it, but I think it's better than nothing. The one here would obviously be England, Ireland, France, Scotland & Wales. The one down under would be Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga/Samoa.
It could be done in 3 or 4 weeks with mid-week games, done in the same format as the Union 6 Nations, ie 1 game v each team and no final.
SL will have to take a break like it does for the Challenge Cup.
