| Quote: Aboveusonlypie "After being made scapegoat over what happened at Hull Martin Gleeson battled depression to come back at Salford. If you look at his career he has achieved quite a lot, though perhaps not the amount his great ability would suggest. I think that Martin has overcome a lot to be where he is today and I wish him luck this season - starting on Thursday. His interview on (I think) Sky at the end of last season was very revealing and quite emotional. He has been through some dark times and for I one think he has learnt.
I don't think it is very helpful to label someone as "thick" and incapable of learning - as a previous post suggested. People have the ability to constantly surprise us - it's one of the reasons we bother with education, because everyone has the ability to learn and change.'"
Very well said.
But back to Longy. I don't know the chap personally, so can't comment on his private conduct. But until we stop giving bad role models a free ticket, then we will always struggle to enforce proper values. Publically, Sean Long has had his troubles and many of them have been splashed around the papers, add to that the point that he does not seem to have learned that times have changed and he really does not deserve any more chances as far as I am concerned.
Sad loss to the game as he did have some talent, but for fear of tainting some younger players with his attitude, not worth the risk. Best out of our game altogether and get a proper job.

| The problem with Long is that he never admits that he's in the wrong. Even now he's attempted to construct some cock and bull story to cover his real reason for departure.
Has he ever been known to admit publically thats he's screwed up and held his hands up? Not that I know of!

Like you I don't know the bloke. I'm guessing that he has a fair degree of personal charm and charisma. Because how else does he keep getting job offers? By my reckoning he has worked for Salford/Fev/Wigan and London within the past 12 months.
I do find it strange that with his track record that clubs think he could be even remotely considered to be a positive role model. I was staggered that Wigan offered him a job. As I say, the bloke must have something positive going for him. And therefore, my guess is that he won't ever need to join the 'rat race'.

They could join the panel of "Eggheads". They could do with some new blood.
