just been looking through clips of past Boxing Day matches. Even after all this time you can feel what it meant to both players and fans. Some great games with packed crowds, lots of atmosphere and plenty of crazy stuff going on that you don't see anymore. For me Boxing Day 1986 reflects the emergence of the Wigan team that went on to dominate rugby league for years. But on a personal note, my Christmas highlight was always this game with everyone in great spirits - probably full of spirits too!!

Boxing Day matches were always marvellous occasions.

A major downside though was visiting the GENTs at half time, when all the blokes had been eating and drinking 'rich' foods especially sprouts. Oh dear.

just a quick question.
I lived within walking distance of Central Park, so it didnt affect me, but was there public transport to matches in those days?
These days its impossible to get anywhere on boxing day unless you have a car and are sober enough to drive

I can remember going to Central Park on Christmas day several times on the bus, the L.U.T from Atherton, change at the Bird in the Hand at Hindley then the bus to Wigan.
It always seemed to be Salford at home then on Christmas day, followed by the Saints match the day after(home or away).

Can we stick to talking about Boxing Day games please
