| Another bit of a ramble from a fan who tends to linger in the past.
On the 29th of December 1956 Wigan played Workington Town at Central Park with a 2-30pm kickoff,in the days before floodlights all the league kicked off at 2-30 with a 5 min half time from about mid November through to app the end of January.
The only lighting you had was the light coming from the stairways and the exits to the stands etc at various parts of the ground, plus the odd bulb along the edge of the stand roofs.
What was remarkable about this match was not the score (52-05 to Wigan ) or a superb game breaking move, but the final try of the match that brought the house down.
That try was scored by Billy Boston and was proberbly the most destructive try I have ever seen by any player.
Wigan had just scored with a couple of min to go and the score stood at 49-05 when Workington kicked off. All the Workington forwards lined up on the halfway line on the Dougy side and the Wigan forwards faced them, props and hooker on the 10 yard line with the second row and loose forward a bit deeper for the deeper kick.
The Workington player kicked as deep has he could and Billy was standing about 5 yards from his own try line when he took the ball.
Billy could have taken the first tackle gone to ground and the Ref may have blown the whistle for full time, but Billy had other ideas.
He set off down the touchline towards the advancing Workington players with one thought in mind, the Wigan players looked at Billy coming towards them and did the sensible thing, they got out of the way.
He never deviated from the touch line from start to finish, the first Workington players he met where the quickest players following the kickoff, after that came the props who came lumbering towards him.
It was like watching a giant bowling ball hitting extra large skittles ,bodies flying everywhere. When he was through the forwards he only had about 40 yards to go and the only players left to face where a couple of backs covering across and the fullback.
I dont thing these covering backs where too keen after seeing what he had done to the forwards,Billy just swatted them off and placed the ball down in the corner.
Billy would have been about 22/23 at the time and at the peak of his powers,I dont know if anyone else on here will remember this ,but I seem to recollect someone saying that his dad often mentioned it.

| My dad mentioned it years ago, when we had Ray Mordt on the wing and we played Workington or Whitehaven in a match, their poor winger, who looked like Duncan Goodhew was trampled on.

| I don't remember that one but there are three more Boston tries that stand out in my memory.
First of all Leeds away in the Challenge Cup in 1957. I was eight years old at the time. my dad had a very bad accident at work in 1956 (broke his back and both legs) and had come out of hospital just before Christmas.
He and my mam decided we should go to Leeds game, by train. What we didn't realise was that the station wasn't at Headingley but in the city centre. We walked to the ground and my dad was in agony. When we got there the gates were locked (full house) but the Wigan fans broke them down to get into the ground.
Billy B scored two 75 yarders that day and was labelled as Wigans sepia streak. Sadly Leeds won 13 - 11 but Wigan had played with twelve men (Bolton or it may have been Platt had left the field with a broken leg) and Eric Ashton missed a conversion that would have tied the game.
Bostons two tries that day are still talked about by the Leeds fans who attended that game.
EDIT I've just checked on the official Leeds site and the crowd that day as shown as 38,914, the highest ever Leeds "gate" for a home tie.
The other one was the one at Salford. Catching a drop out Boston caught the ball about 20 yards from his own line. He beat his opposing winger and centre on the touchline before cutting inside to be met by the advancing Salford pack. Somehow Billy emerged from the tackles, rounded the fullback and scored under the posts. What made it more special was the Salford players actually clapped Billy as he walked back to take his position and the Salford fans stood as one to applaud one of the greatest tries they would probably ever see.
