Quote: Wigan Peer ""An empty taxi arrived at Langtree Park, and when the door was opened, Mr Rush got out"
Apologies to Winston Churchill....'"
I did read somewhere that Churchill was embarrassed about that alleged quote (about Attlee) and used to deny having said it about a man who was his deputy in the War coalition government and who Churchill knew had done a great service to his country. (People often overlook the immense role Attlee played in the War, we owe our freedom today not merely to Churchill but to the other great men in that government).
Whether or not Churchill actually made the taxi joke about Attlee, who knows? Perhaps Rogues can shed some light on what people thought at the time?
He did not however deny having said that Attlee was a "modest man, who has much to be modest about", which is also a great line.
