To this day my Dad still talks about the 1970 final and the Hepworth tackle. He tells me that Hepworth never played against Wigan again after that final. Not sure if that's correct though.

Yes, the ball was thrown back from dummy half to Johnny Walsh (great player). Wigan were leading 12 -11 at the time (a drop goal was then two points). Every Saints player was in front of the ball, but it missed by a mile. However Tyrer let the ball bounce and it came back from behind the try line for Benyon to score.

The photos that Fames mentioned, or similar, were on display in the Royal Oak pub for years. Dreadful incident, on a recent visit to Cas Hepworth and Hardisty were presented to the crowd for some reason and the Wigan contingent roundly booed. Directed I'm sure at Hepworth and not his side kick!

A Wigan fan on the train back said "Well we lost that Cup Final on a knock out"

Hell, hadn't realised there were so many "mature" members of this board! My first Wembley as well aged 12 and I remember the championship match at Swinton. Watched that on TV as I couldn't get to the game. Often thought that having the back row of the time added to the teams of the 80's and 90's would have been interesting. Ashurst was the best player I have ever seen. Wasn't the young Eddie Cunningham starting to challenge for a starting spot around that time as well? Doug Laughton was a terrific player although he seemed to spend all year injured but be ready to play the week before the first round of the challenge cup!
