Yes, they did. The Brigantes were like most Celtic tribes - warlike and given to squabbling with other tribes (I don't think they had message boards, though...

They covered a vast area, most of what is now northern England, so not just a Wigan connection, to be fair. I don't think the name has anything to do with "brigade" in that sense - more like "high", so you can take your choice of whether that means high as in superior or elevated as in the Pennines.
