I would probably be harsh in those circumstances and deem that as his only way of controlling the ball was to knock it high over the defensive line and re-gather, it had to be a deliberate act to avoid a knock on, however it could be argued the ball freakishly deflected in that way, rather than being intentional, and was accidental.
