Rugby Union used to have the games object as 'kick more goals (may have said points) than your opponents' (may have changed now since they went pro) The term 'TRY' comes from the fact you got a try at goal.

You can't have a "try" at goal unless you learn how to put the ball down over the "try" line. You can always take every penalty kick on offer or alternatively attempt a drop goal whenever your in striking range, oh but wait a minute.......rugby union does that already!

That's probably what irritates me most about RU - the main tactic always seems to be to attempt to win a penalty within kicking range rather than score a try.
