| Gutted really, although its what i expected, just think it's quite sad how he was our first choice 1 at the start of the season and i thought he was excellent to be honest at the end of last season and start of this, then he's just been far too unlucky with injuries

| I'm really sad to see him go, and Aoife is going to be gutted.
I hope he gets fixed up with a new club soon as he's a really good covering FullBack IMO.
It was just unfortunate that that he picked up the injuries and then had Pat, followed by both Amos and Sam to hold him out of the team.

| I'm sort of disapointed because he was superb at the back end of last season, he was my MOM in the big one last year as well and he continued that form into the start of 2010. The first couple of games this year showed he is a really good player.
However without him being our first choice number 1, he is not worth a spot. I'm sure he will do really well at FB somewhere else. I think one of the smaller clubs in super league could get alot out of him.
Is there a link?

| He showed us how a full back should play in attack, could easily have been an assist machine, just unlucky to come behind Sam and Roberts.
He should get a SL contract imo, although whoever signs him would probably get ridiculed - but he is a far better Full Back than a lot in this league.
Shame he was a nice guy too, it seems to have undermined his ability somewhat, due to people praising him for that instead of his ability, leading to others claiming that being nice was all he was.
Good luck to him.

| Correct decision IF true. he was a great attacker but seemed to go missing when he needed to make 1 on 1 tackles. May well have made a good stand off IMO

| History will judge whether Phelps was a big loss or just another Mark Cannon.
For those not old enough, Cannon was a previously unknown Aussie stand-off/centre who we signed in 1984. He had several very good games for us, and was tipped as the hero to win the Cup for Wigan that year, though Widnes and Joe Lydon had other ideas.
People lamented his departure the following season, but within a couple of years - when a new age at Wigan had clearly dawned - nobody remembered him at all.
If it turns out that Phelps has left because he has no role to play in a truly great Wigan side - as Mark Cannon did - then, though I liked him as a lad, I'll not be upset.

| Quote cadoo="cadoo"A wise move IMO. I would have been shocked had we kept him.
Although I don't think we will/should retain Pryce either - I don't know how you can justify letting Ainscough go (and now apparently Phelps) but keep Karl Pryce.'"
My thoughts exactly. IMO Phelps will either go Quins/Salford, where I reckon he'll do well.
Good luck to him

Don't see why not. As i've said before I think he would be a more than capable fullback for anyone outside the top 4.

Yes, but not as well.
Full Back and Stand Off are probably his best positions. Biggest strength is his cut out passing really.
EDIT: Just checked his stats on the SL website, can't believe he only played 6 matches this year (5 when you can't he missed the second half of two of thse through injury). Even with this and a couple of poor games by his standards, on average he was still getting 2 tries, 2 assists every 3 games, a clean break every match, 1.5 tackles busts and just over 100m a match.
I'd still say he's above the "average" label many give him, just behind better players and isn't somebody we need.
