Quote: Leyland Warrior "I just thought i'd share a small personal reflection on the GF win, and what it meant to someone very close to me.
My Mum was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, shortly after the death of my Sister from the same affliction.
Within months the horrible condition took a firm grip on her, and she began to succumb quite quickly.
However, she never let the illness prevent her from following every single game during our title-winning season. Albeit via radio, TV, and what i told her personally.
During the playoff's, she took an awful turn for the worse and had to be taken into St Catherines Hospice.
But even through all the pain and blurry mist created by a constant morphine drip, she held it together - Partly (i believe) to see how Wigan ended the season.
Whenever i saw her, i would relate how we were doing.....Tell her what was coming next.......And tease her about getting the cherry n white on, and coming with us. It was the one thing that would always raise a smile with her.
So i cant even begin to explain how emotional i felt at Old Trafford, watching us lift the trophy and knowing that my Mum was in her bed listening on the radio.
For me, it was an evening that meant a whole lot more than just us winning the SL trophy.
How much of it registered with her, we'll never know - But i do know that she knew we had won.
I saw her the day after, and through all of the pain she still knew that we were Champions.
She died yesterday. And i sincerely believe that Wigan's run for glory was a major factor in her holding on for so long.

My mum was a season ticket holder until just a few years ago (when she said she was too old to keep up on the walk to the JJB!).
She was also witness to some amazing highs, and terrible lows over the last few years.
And on behalf of my entire family, i simply cannot express how much this years Championship success meant to all of us....And to her.
That we won it this year, of all years, will leave a lasting memory that i'm unlikely to ever forget.
Thanks Guys.'"

My Mum passed away in April this year two days short of her 90th birthday so I can appreciate how you must feel. My Mum was not a big Wigan fan but took an interest because me and my Dad are the fanatics so she was always pleased if we came back from a game with smiles on our faces.

At Old Trafford it was just me and my son and it has been like that at the DW for most of this season as my Dad who is 84 has also not been well and has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I couldn't take him to Old Trafford as he physically was not up to it. A great pity after many years of Grandfather, son and Grandson going to games he could not make it to the one we won so that thought was going across my mind when we were there. He has seen the final since on TV but gets confused as to what the game actually is such are his memory problems. Hopefully next season I can get him to the odd game but we will have to see how he is.

Dave'"

Some very heart-rending stories on here - sincere condolences to all who have recently lost loved ones. It is enlightening to read how closely interwoven the fortunes of WRLFC are in our own lives and how their triumphs can often help ease pain and grief.

I went to see my dad ( now in his 80's too) with my daughter and a friend in the care home early on the Saturday afternoon - he is too bad on his legs to get to games now. He so would have liked to be at Old Trafford - I got the radio tuned in for him ( no Sky at the Care home!) and he listened to the game, then saw the highlights on TV on Sunday.

For those of us with elderly parents, they are a mine of information. Dad's first game was Wigan v Salford on Christmas Day in 1935 approx and he tells a good story of being in a packed "hen pen" ( that was a section for children behind the sticks at the clubhouse end of Central Park). Wigan still played Saints, by the way, on Boxing Day that year - in fact they played 5 games in 10 days over the festive period! Wouldn't happen nowadays - although it did in "Mission Impossible" week in 91!
