according to somebody who posted on there Lydons kick was 60 yards which converts to just over 54 metres so this kick is 6 metres further by my calculations

Lydon's kick has been officially stated as 61 yards (about 55 metres). The Steyn one is probably about the same (look at the stills further up in the thread) the two players are about the same distance from the broken line 10m inside the half. As such it seems that both are about the same distance with Steyn's looking no more than 1-2m longer.

However putting on my pedantic hat.

This may not be the case as although he may be further inside his own half Steyn may also be closer to the goalposts.

The halfway line is often arbitrarily referred to by commentators and fans alike as being 50m from the try line but this is not always the case as some pitches are longer and some shorter than 100m from tryline to tryline. There is no set single pitch length. The only constants are that the halfway line is halfway between the two trylines, the broken line (or now in many RL pitches unbroken line) nearest to the halfway line is 10m inside the half (to allow for adjudicating on restart kicks travelling the required 10m) and the 20m line is 20m out from the tryline in each half. Only by knowing the exact length of the pitch Steyn was playing on from tryline to tryline can it be determined whether his drop goal was from further out.
