Quote: Bilko "I recall Wigan getting a penalty try in a dead rubber nothing to play for final round match against Leeds in 2002 in which Craig Smith was stripped of the ball whilst trying to score but we didn't get an extra shot. We just got the conversion brought in front of the sticks.
Same happened in last years world cup final as well.
Never seen an extra penalty given though.'"
An 8 point try is given when a player is fouled during the act of scoring, but still scores. The try is given, and conversion taken as normal, then an extra penalty kick for goal under the sticks. Hardly ever given, though I do recall one given to David Solomona when he was at Wakey, but can't remember why. I gave one once when I used to ref, much to the bemusement of the Haydock crowd on the day.
A penalty try is given when a foul stops a player from scoring, who the ref thinks would have scored otherwise. Try is given and then the conversion is taken under the sticks. These of course happen every season.
