I suggest the criticism Mathers got on an Internet forum (and I was actually one who was prepared to give him a chance) has nothing to do with any good form at Wire.
He isn't the first player to leave here in recent years and get a new lease of life elsewhere is he? It used to be the the other way around. We took seemingly average players and turned them into better players.

AJ is spot on. Mathers was hounded and abused by the Wigan fans everytime the ball went near him in a game. Whenever the ball was kicked towards him the fans would start to groan in anticipation of him making an error. You could tell by the way Mathers would hesitate picking a loose ball up that he was scared to death of making a mistake so much so that he was trying so hard not to make an error that he would do. His confidence was shot to pieces. I suggest you try playing fullback with 12000+ of your own so called fans mocking you everytime the ball goes near you.
