The irony is that Noble would probably get less stick if he dropped him.

You can only drop him if you have someone to put in his place, and we don't at present.

I think Phelps should play FB again but not at the expense of Ainscough which is the dilema Noble has at the minute IMO.

As I have said elsewhere Phelps link up play at FB looks very very promising and as much as I like Sir Pat of Richards hes not the best at coming into the line when attacking.

Phelps hasn't really been exposed at fullback yet so it's difficult to know how good he is defensively but attacking wise he's got a far better rugby brain than Richards. I know it's been mentioned that he's played standoff at junior level and I think this comes across with his link up play and his distribution.
