I don't really care if he's wasting his own money but he has consistently taken us backwards with his terrible decisions. Not good for the club which should be bigger than one person but unfortunately isn't.

The club might argue they are offering great deals to get people to the last few games and that is a positive. But what is the target audience and how are they promoting this ? How are they encouraging people who do show up to come back ? Needs more than the game itself.
I had some folks sat behind me yesterday who were clearly there for the first time. They didn't know the rules though. How difficult is it to explain the basics to folks in a flyer ? I bet they didn't know where the pub was hidden either. Nothing at all for kids.

| We’ve been down this argument a few times now. The Match day experience is uncoordinated and poor. I agree when schools and scouts etc clubs begin again Broncos should be all over it with free tickets but really it’s too late in the season for a big push now they need to go again next season.
A flyer explaining the game would be a useful option as would team sheets or programmes. Some people had team sheets some didn’t some kind of orderly handing out of them by staff would make sense. I noted they had a fire sale of Broncos products at very good prices and doing good levels of sales but I think that many of those products hadn’t been available at the ground before or regularly. I think that’s something they might want to think about as a minimum. For me the massive gap in home games has holed this season below the water line commercially. I don’t know if it’s going to be a common thing. If so, I can’t see this move working ever. As Orange has said corporate is really for business (corporations) they need to look at their whole approach again. The good news is the learning points are there in bold technicolour all they need to do is apply them for next season and crowds may grow ... but nothing is guaranteed on field competence from the start of the season would really help to get people coming back. Remember that Widnes game... big crowd, press advertising really poor performance game over within 20 minutes....and then there was the Whitehaven game........what a way to start a season and drive up crowds. Nothing is as easy as it seems from the armchair but that was a really flawed approach to relaunch success.

I didn't notice this until after the curtain raiser.

I did pop down there but didn’t see them. You’d think they would put them in the main concourse as well. It’s all a bit random. Still hopefully they are learning what works and what doesn’t. I say ‘they’ but I’m far from convinced there is much of a ‘they’. They’ve got the social media/comms/match day announcement thing working much much better than at the start of the year. Much more upbeat, professional and of the appropriate standard but it seems to me that there are still massive gaps in the overall infrastructure. It may well be a financial thing in which case it is what it is but it’s also chicken and egg situation: you have a well. publcised, smoothly run product you start getting good sales which drives the whole thing forward-virtuous circle. Lots for management to think about.

| Online proggies are fast becoming the norm at lower level non league football. Usually a simple PDF, not interactive, making it even easier. They usually put posters with a QR code up to make it easy for fans to download.

Even if we did have a programme there should be something aimed at newcomers who may not buy one. A pop up display near the entrance explaining the basics would be good.

We used to have a beginners guide in programmes.....but then again, we used to have a lot of things that Hughes has deemed unnecessary.

Rugby League rules are vastly different than Union, so make sure you read our guide to make sure you know the difference.

3 minute read
On the Rugby League pitch
The pitch is rectangular in shape with a set of H-shaped posts at each end situated on the goal or try line.
A Rugby League match is 80 minutes long and consists of two 40 minutes halves with the sides changing ends (the direction in which they attack) after half-time.
Rugby League teams field 13 players on the pitch and are allowed four reserves on the bench.
Aim of Rugby League and scoring
The basic aim is naturally to score more points than your opponents. Points are scored in Rugby League on the following basis:
‘Try’ — 4 points. A try is scored when the ball is grounded over the try line of the opposing team.
‘Conversion’ — 2 points. Following a try a team is given an extra opportunity to score points by kicking the ball from a position directly related to where the try was scored. To score these ‘extra’ two points, the kicker must get the ball through the uprights of the posts and above the crossbar.
‘Drop goal’ — 1 point. Scored by drop kicking the ball so that it passes between the posts and above the crossbar.
‘Penalty goal’ — 2 points. After an infringement, the team awarded a penalty can take a kick at goal and will gain two points if successful.
Basics of Rugby League
The game starts with a kick-off as one team kicks the ball into the opposition half and then attempts to gain possession. The team in possession then attempt to move the ball up the pitch by passing it to hand or kicking it.
There are rules concerning how the ball must be passed and for how long teams are able to keep possession before it passes to their opponents. The most basic rules are:
The ball when passed by hand has to be passed backwards.
Player can pass the ball as many times as they like until one of them is tackled (brought down legally and held) in possession.
Teams have possession of the ball for six tackles or plays. On the sixth play, teams usually elect to kick the ball long down the field to gain territory. If they do not kick, after the sixth tackle the ball is ‘handed over’ to the other team.
When tackled, the ball carrier plays the ball backwards by foot along the ground to a teammate behind them.
When a player has been tackled, his opponent must release him to enable him to play the ball.
A scrum, consisting of six players per team is used to re-start the game after the ball has been ‘knocked-on’ or fumbled forward or when a forward pass has occurred. A scrum is also formed when a player is tackled into touch or when the ball is kicked into touch. Scrums are not contested like they are in Rugby Union.
Players can be ruled offside if they are in front of a teammate who is in possession and they are deemed to be interfering with play. Players are not allowed to touch the ball if they were further up the field than a teammate who has kicked the ball upfield i.e. only players who are behind the player kicking the ball are allowed to touch it.
Penalties can be awarded in other circumstances such as high tackles, hitting an opponent, tripping, kicking the ball when a player is attempting to pick it up, using foul or abusive language. Offenders can be given a yellow or red card, a yellow resulting in a 10 minute spell in the sin-bin to cool off.
There are of course a number of other laws and rules in Rugby League that we haven’t covered here in our attempt not to baffle you from the outset, but the more you watch or play the game, the more clear these other rules will become. Good luck getting to grips with Rugby League.
