Rugby League is a sport that desperately needs to expand its geographical supporter base and its player base. This imperative means that all other requirements are secondary until this is done.
All power in the game should be with governing bodies, especially international governing bodies.
Without these actions we will remain a minor sport internationally and nationally.: |
|
| Christ, and we wonder why the spread of RL into the parts of the UK that have never seen a pit or a whippet has been stymied...
Most union spectators seem to be reasonably open-minded about our game, a few even grow to prefer it to the sport they grew up with. Yet tools with infantile opinions and personality defects do all they can to alienate them before they get the chance to form an opinion???

| as a london rl fan living very close to Bath, its terrible, i can hardly speak to any of my neighbours, they are either Bath RU fans or football supporters so obviously i dont get on with either of them its just so bad!!
Sorry mate I ahve to take the micky, we dont all line up and face each other off you know! I dont ask people when i see them what there chosen sport is, only problems i ever have is if i am away anywhere and there is RL and RU on sky at the same time, getting the yawnion boys to watch the league is impossible, but same can be said for when the kickball is on
Obviously you have gone on to the Leeds site and asked the same question

The one exception to this was in Edinburgh last year when all the pubs and bars seemed to be showing the RL. Two of the Irish provinces were playing in a big union semi final on the Saturday afternoon and I did enjoy seeing a bunch of blokes in the colours of one of the competing union teams wandering in and out of several bars vainly trying to find one showing the union!

This so called tool you are on about has had quite a few unpleasant encounters with RU types hence the username.

| well having just been at a union club in Gloucester (which is a very workingmans ru area) for a rugby league game, then afterwards back in the club house where they had the Bath Leeds game on sky, spookily the RU types were oohhh right as rain
Maybe its not them thats the problem mate! If you ahte rugby union so much dont watch it! and dont get in discussions with other people about the sport, thats what i do with the kickball friends i have, when they start talking about manchester rovers or tottenham unisted or what ever they are called, i walk away and let em get on with it or talk about more interesting things like young ladies etc etc
we share a ground with a union team, its a bloody good stadium, in no way does that mean i have to sit in the stands having a deep and meaningfull discussion about which is the best game, if there are any union fans watching quins RL its generally coz they have an interest in league as well ooh ands vica versa

RU types? How do you know they were RU types? Did they all have butlers to hold their coats and pimms whilst they gave you a good kicking? Did they all have top hats on?.....I have never had anothing other than good fun and decent conversation (occasional drunken and boorish behaviour) from these RU types in my many encounters. In fact, until 2002 I would probably have been classed as a RU Type....
...as for unpleasant encounters, only with soccer fans and sad to say league fans.
Your username points to where you wanted this thread to go....sorry to disappoint you, but we get on fine with our Union brothers.

I can spot an RU type a mile off. Perhaps this is owing to my upbringing as an RL supporter in a RU environment. I don't like to have anything to do with RU supporters anymore tbh. The vast majority are pompous, arrogant and annoying.

disagree Listy. Yes, there are pockets of Hooray Henrys and especially in the quartered jersey, but in the majority, they are usually just fans of their game and they don't understand League. I have never had trouble with Union fans.......but each to their own.

| The stuck up ,Pimms glugging, hooray -henry types are a pre- concieved stereo typical cartoon-like notion that should be dispelled...The ones that I,ve encountered and had a drink and a bit of banter with (generally speaking) have all been good company and enjoyed the buzz of our game...I hope other double headers involving the RU side of things happen again next year..Of course there are a few blinkered ones who think we are the lowest of the low and behave like s..but to be fair..we have the odd 1 or 2 who attend just our games....

They don't understand League because of their arrogance/ignorance towards the game. Therefore I want nothing to do with them. I haven't had any trouble with them either, doesn't mean I would spend any time talking to one though.

I have more respect for those who watch Union and League than anyone who supports our club, and I believe several posters on these boards fall into that category. A fantastic effort. I really couldn't do it. The types that will sneer at our sport are well in the majority IMO, contrary to GF's opinion. My personal experience, those who attend games of RU are generally idiots. Those who enjoy the sport but don't have any club affiliation tend to be far more open minded about things.

So far wrong it's laughable.
Club supporters of any sporting club have an affiliation generally to the club and the sport, if you want to see the closest thing to the OP's stereotypical Union supporter the West Car Park at Twickenham on International game day is the place to be, and none of them will be wearing club colours, and pretty much most of them will not go week in week out to a club game, for them it's the social occasion, corporate networking event in the same diary as Ascot, Henly, Guards club etc. Some Quins supporters will fall into both catagories for sure, but don't damn the whole lot of them.
Its a shame that London Irish are not down the road in Sunbury anymore as you could get along to one of their games and try and open your eyes, or at Wasps or even Saracens.
I grew up playing and going to Union games mate for many years, and have a rough idea what I am chuntering on about and in general have had more grief from steroetypical League supporters fitting a certain mould than I have Union club supporters fitting theirs.

| I've got a season ticket for RU as well as the RL and I have to say the vast majority of Quins RU supporters don't mind us and actually would like for us to be successful. I've brought along several Quins RU supporters to a RL match and they've really enjoyed it. Listy, perhaps you should experience a Saracens home match at Wembley - I went to their game with Quins RU there, and it was as far removed from a "hooray henry" experience as you could possibly imagine.

I know, I don't disagree with that. What I meant was people with no club affiliation, i.e. those who enjoy watching International matches on the TV, and that is about as far as it goes. This is the category that the vast number of people who watch RU fall into. I've had the misfortune of attending games at Leicester, but I'm not sure what I really need to be opening my eyes to. You are honestly telling me that those who watch Leicester Tigers would be symapthetic towards Rugby League in comparison to the millions who watch RU on the TV?
