Quote: Euclid "I was quite friendly with the worlds greatest rugby player for a while when the Crusaders were at Barnet, he's a very nice bloke. I remember him getting a load of really personal abuse at one home game, and after 20 minutes or so he planted a free kick right in their midst, scattering them, as like many big mouths they were scared of the ball. 5 minutes later he did it again. Then they moved, but he found them. He must have put the ball into them a dozen times before they gave up and left. A bit of poetic justice I've only ever seen taking place once...'"

Ha - I remember that!

Quote: The Chronicler of Chiswic "Of course, this all depends on whether you believe the figures the clubs give out. The official gate for the Kells game was 370, which oddly enough is the same as that given for our game against Mansfield on the morning of the FA Cup final the previous season - take it from me, you'd have to lop at least 200 off that to get near the true figure!
(edited for brain f*r*)'"

No way were there 370 there. Have dug out some programmes from later in 1987 & they do say 370 but remember the game well as it was a Tuesday afternoon & rushing to Chiswick from work, having finished at 1. Unfortunately, from the party of 4 who were at the game, 2 are now deceased & the third suffers from dementia but if I catch him in a moment of clarity, will ask him if he remembers how many he thought were there. Shame Bob Evans is no longer with us, he could probably have not only given the crowd figure but also named 99% of them !

Now, as for some of those 'official' crowds for Crystal Palace & what Struddy told you privately . . . icon_wink.gif

I was at the Kells match... Crowd boosted by the local BT engineers who were on strike. I also knew Bob Evans well, great bloke.
I would say that crowds are lower than watched Fulham as Wakefield brought supporters which in the 80's didn't often happen. I would agree that we are heading to the championship, Saturdays performance was a big backward step from previous performances, I doubt the watching Gary Hetherington went home worried (think he left at HT).

Just re-read the comments and in no way shape or form did I mean any disrespect to any of those no longer with us.......which I would have thought given the original topic was obvious to most

No I wasn't suggesting you were in any sense being disrespectful to anyone alive or in the past. No your comment was on the basis that it was suddenly a wake.

well, the conversations regarding "back in the day" did remind me of the type of reminiscing that goes on at funerals....and London Broncos are most certainly not in "rude health".

For the record, 3,380 was the average the season before Gus....3,600 is the TOTAL attendance for three games thus far.

Ah, happy memories of the days when the crowd changes were read out to the players - how good it is to see that the new owners are respecting our traditions icon_twisted.gifIncidentally, I wasn't at the Kells game - couldn't get time off work.

I only got there because I worked a night shift then the following morning one so somebody could cover for me !

Worth remembering, crowd that season for the away game at Huddersfield was 391 hardy souls !

And I was one of them! One of the more bizarre games I've been at as only the open terracing opposite the main stand was open - got some pictures of it somewhere, but there's no point in digging them out as I haven't a clue how to post them on here. Oh, and we won 24-16.
