The average crowd at Widnes in our last season of Super League was about 6,800. We were only higher than second bottom once that season.
Not that I'm agreeing with the argument, just pointing out that our crowds were good.

| Paddock: Sorry, but who apart from a 1st year Marketing student thought that 5,000 plastic Oyster Card Holders was going to add to the gate?
DSWG: ? Puzzled by what you mean? What did I get wrong? The free tickets thing.....yeah, I have resisted it in the past but mainly because when it has happened the club haven't "followed it up", but what else do I have to be sorry for?
You two have my respect as you are two of the most loyal supporters the club has...the problem is that unless the club can find another 3,000 like you, they will continue to ship cash like confetti!
I make no secret of my disdain for the clubs activity (or lack of it) in the marketing department and the figures between 2000 up until now do nothing to disprove my rantings.....
I repeat.....fill the ground for Salford....by hook or by crook...even if they have to bus kids in, but make the effort. 4 weeks of 7am to 8pm working days.....run up a phone bill, spend some cash on leafletting/advertising in a local free-sheet...I mean REALLY have a go.
One of my abididng early memories of the club is when two very active supporters helped arrange a leaflet drop in the brentford area and it was done purely by "fans". I picked up the flyers from the club and then that staff member who gave them to me simply said goodbye and left for home . The Club need to get pro-active. The staff need to be made aware that all of their Jobs are on the line if we fail to get more bums on seats. Everyone from PB down to the Tea person need to get involved.....
as it is......does anyone expect a 3k gate for the Salford game? No away fans to speak of....I reckon the high 2,000's will roll up, putting us on a 2,600 average......
I apologise if I upset some on here by speaking bluntly, but I don't apologise to anyone for what I am saying.
Come on Quins...Prove me wrong. Please......prove me wrong!

Luck is a combination of preparation and opportunity
Just to avoid confusion Starbug is the username of Steven Pike
SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!:9005.jpg |

| Quins RL are not competing against Football,Rugby Union,West end shows, the Cinema or even TV
They are competing against themselves , just like every other spectator business in the world , until they start to ask themselves very simple questions they will not get anywhere
Who bought their very first cigarette ? , or even their first beer ?

Good point (although I didn't know the club smoked or drank)
Nobody knows we exist........seriously, nobody. Why do you think that is?
Time to bite the bullet.........either aggressively promote the game/club/experience or wave the white flag as far as SL rugby is concerned.

| The game in London needs help from the RFL, i'd hold the Magic weekend there for the next ten years. Wembley, Emirates, Twickenham, Stamford Bridge, wherever but there needs to be a concerted long term effort to make the London franchise a viable entity.

Olympic Stadium? Dunno when its due to open but could be a chance to get to use it for the Magic Weekend before the main event there in 2012, could be like a dry run for the organisers with a crowd of approx 30-35,000 each day to handle. Thoughts anyone?

The Challenge Cup has been played at Wembley for nearly a century and there's been a Super League club within the city for over a decade.
There's your ''long term effort to make a London franchise a viable entity''.

It's primarily an athletics stadium, not a football stadium. There are better venues in London, like those Dan155 mentioned. The main snag would be finding a date when nobody objected to having seven games played on their pitch, so I suppose in that respect the Olympic Stadium could be more feasible.
As Magic weekend began (or at least I got this impression) as a tool to promote rugby league in South Wales and pave the way for a Superleague club in the region it would make more sense to me to stage it in London than in Edinburgh, Dublin, or anywhere else where there isn't even any semi-pro RL.

| re the MM surely it boils down to which city wants to pay the RFL to host it rather than the supporters wishing it was A B or C?
London will not exactly be awash with cash after 2012

Well yes, some of us are probably being a bit naive here. It just seems a bit pointless to me having an annual beano in Edinburgh (great city to visit regardless of Magic weekend) when there's no more matches for any locals to watch for another year. A bit like Wembley Stadium selling out for a match between two top American gridiron teams even though (to the best of my knowledge) the game isn't even played semi-professionally in this country and no one watches it live for the rest of the year.
If Magic Weekend is going to help spread the word and encourage genuine expansion it has to happen in a place where there will be further high level matches for potential converts to watch throughout the season and to get hooked on regular live games. Otherwise I don't really see the point.

I thought that the original point of having the Magic weekends in Cardiff (ignoring any alleged financial benefits) was to try to replicate the great weekend atmosphere that resulted when the CCF was played there, and previously in Edinburgh, something that doesn't happen with Wembley where the small-ish no. of RL fans who choose to make a weekend of it are "lost" in London.
I doubt that it's now the point though because the Magic weekends are nowhere near as well attended as the Edinburgh and Cardiff CCFs were. The concept of having all the SL teams playing over two days was quite a bright and bold one, but I don't think it's worked, unfortunately.
