| Poor guy, hope somebody can help him to get his head straight, he really was an Entertainer when he played for Saints.

| It would seem that the Clubs strongly worded statement is another example of people unfit for purpose at the club. The Irony of the London Broncos statement including the termhis performances "did not meet the professional levels expected'" ...is indicative of someone wanting to sound like they are in charge when in fact, they haven't a bloody clue as to what is going on. Sounds like London Broncos RLFC have sacked a player who was actually "unwell"

Shame on you whomever issued rlTHISrl statement without first investigating further!
As I said earlier, I hope he gets the help he needs and gets through this terrible time with the support of those around him!

Why should they have to investigated further before London came out with the statement? Perhaps he hid from his new employers what was going on and maybe his performance was not what he has promised the club.He was working one day a week, perhaps he never turned up on time?
He had history at other clubs with off the field problems.Maybe London thought "Lets give him a chance" and he did not reach Londons expectations?

The club has a duty of care to its employees. Money/Wages are increasingly seen as secondary to employees seeking "good employment" whereas working conditions, benefits etc are now a key element in selecting a prospective employer. If Long had "history" and the club were "taking a chance" then I would suggest that a certain amount of research and background checks would/should have been made. As it is, if he was "late" or "didn't turn up" then most employers would at first enquire as to 'why" and try to discover the root cause and offer a pathway to sorting any problems out. The Statement from the club is curt and to the point......and as a result, the subsequent suicide bid coming to light makes them look bad, regardless of whether they actually are or not.
This is not an attack on the club, but it does point to someone not really thinking through what they were going to say or how they were going to sound.

Insightful as ever.

He makes valid points and I'd like to see the club make a further statement and possibly an apology, dependent on what the facts were. Whoever put out the original one chose to remain anonymous, so responsibility for it must rest with the chief exec.

| I feel sorry for Sean & hope he makes a full recovery. However the article linked to says 2.5 years of depression while the club employed him for 2-3 months. Surely every organisation who employed him previously should be equally to blame given the scandal implied in the post.

Ah......spread the blame around to lessen the embarrassment? Genius!
By all means let him go, but do so with your best wishes.

| The sad thing about people like Sean is if they go to an interview they are unlikely to give their true state of health if it means they won't get the job. The club may have contactd his previous employers but we don't know what they said - if anything. One thing your not alowed to do these days is give people a bad reference.

| I would say the statement issued by the club was as bad a reference as you are 'legally' ever going to see.

| Here is another article from The Guardian. Not pleasant.
The 37-year-old former St Helens and Great Britain scrum-half told the Sunday People that he had taken an overdose in January, and had been released by doctors only when his mother and brother agreed to look after him.
"I tried to take an overdose then I was going to go into the garage and try to start the car with the door down," he said. "That's all I could get in my head. Next day I couldn't remember any of it. I found out later who helped me."
At that point Long, who was forced to retire in 2011 after injuries had ruined a move to Hull, had just joined the Broncos as an assistant coach – having worked last season with Salford and Featherstone.
But the London club issued a statement last week confirming reports that he had been released, and Long was back at Salford for last Thursday night's heavy home defeat by St Helens at the AJ Bell Stadium, working for BBC Radio Manchester.
He seemed in reassuringly good spirits, and confirmed he is looking for another job in the game. "I feel the best I've felt in a long time," he told the People, thanking his former Saints team-mates Keiron Cunningham and Martin Gleeson for their support. "I'm wide awake and alert again. I think it's just been nipped in the bud.
"Any longer and I'd have gone under. I was off the scale but they helped bring me back down. It's a big thing, depression – it gets hold of you. I'm glad I'm out the other side."
Long's predicament brings back painful and tragic memories of the loss of Terry Newton, a former international team-mate and club rival, who took his own life in September 2010 after struggling to come to terms with a two-year drug suspension.
That led to the formation of the State of Mind , with a specific aim of addressing mental health issues for players and former players.[/i
