I believe Justin Morgan got Toulouse to a Challenge Cup semi final before he was 30.

In what sport do they not work, sport is littered with young coaches Football, rugby, American football, Basketball etc etc

Mourinihio, Villas Boas, Don Shula, Mike Tomlin, rugby league coaches listed here, just off the top of my head,

I could argue all day with that statement, Not sure what you are basing that statement on.

The age of the coach is irrelevant, as is whether he played the sport at the top level

Powell should be replaced. I thought he was a poor but convenient and probably low budget appointment at the outset. Sure he has not got the strongest of squads, but does anyone have the confidence that he has the experience and contacts needed to bring in the best that we can afford next season (should DH be serious about delivering 6-7 experienced quality signings for next season).

The results on the pitch do not lie and I for one get fed up with the `we will learn from this ` statements that get trotted out after another loss........the coach and players don`t seem to be learning anything and something has to be done to stem the tide.

He has been given a chance and it does not seem to be working out. We cannot afford the luxury of waiting to see if he will improve, because as a club we have to move forward significantly over the next license period.

I suspect the argument here is what is young- Powell hasn't played the game or held a management position in Industry. He has worked under 1 inexperienced coach in a failing side. It is unlikely you would think that he can succeed.

It was always my position that a coach shouldn't be judged on a single season, particularly with the threadbare squad Powell inherited. It is also worth noting we lose big name players every winter, our squad has always lacked continuity. When was the last pre-season when we had a squad stronger than in the previous one - 2006?

To condemn Powell as a failure now is unfair because it is a team cobbled together of some mediocre, bargain-bin imports, raw but by no means hopeless young players and loanees who in many cases are filling gaps rather than adding any real value. In many people's eyes Powell was fortunate to be given the job by Hughes given his inexperience but he was unlucky to come in at a time when investment in the team was sorely lacking. There is a large part of me that wants to see how Powell does next season, should the rumours be correct and we actually go out and sign some decent players.

On the other hand, if the results were so good early on, why did we fall away so dramatically? No doubt this was all a sharp learning curve for Powell, but questions have to be asked about the failings the team has exhibited since April that mysteriously did not show early on.

We gave McDermott four years. We indulged him and he, eventually, took us, IMO, backwards. If anything Powell has taken us sideways, but for a rookie did we really expect anything else? Top 8 always looked out of our reach given the squad. I think this time next year, if the squad is better and we are still 11th, we'll know that his time is up. I find the argument that we must get rid of him to preserve our license, even though we've just been given a new one with him in the job currently, a rather dubious one. Of far more pressing concern is the crowd situation, which is directly linked to results i.e. the strength of the squad.

I think we are losing sight of the fact that Powell was part of the failed McDermott regime over a significant period of time.......therefore he was not starting from scratch and could be part of the problem. So why did anyone expect an improvement to be forthcoming? I agree that our poor squad and grim performances by some players has contributed significantly to his apparent lack of success, but can we really do nothing and see if he has more success with a no doubt `slightly` improved squad next season. Crowds are a problem, but nothing is going to improve or change if we are dished up more of the same next year.

Powell is in the role entirely because of serendipity and circumstantial luck.

He goes to a region with no RL heritage whilst studying a History degree, gets introduced to the club merely by playing a handful of games and then becomes Head Coach of his old Uni whilst during his Masters degree; they are successful for the region in a limited area of competition both for the Head coach role and in terms of playing.

This same Masters degree involves a thesis on coaching and he likes Rugby League and randomly applies for placements and we are kind and he gets a placement at London Broncos and by implication an introduction to the RFL scene in London, David Hughes etc, who see him as a decent bloke.

He then gets a gig setting up clubs in the London area which feeds into the catchment area of Daryl Pitt at South London Broncos; Pitt suddenly quits and Powell whom is already helping the club by setting up new London teams as a co-ordinator is automatically given the role which then moves from the national conference to the weaker London only league and proves he is good with amateurs impressed by the textbook of plays.

His outrageous good fortune continues when he is brought into coach the juniors but the experienced Damian McGrath quits within weeks of his start and the foolish McDermott does a complete about turn and instead of getting an appropriately experienced assisant gives this humble novice an assistant manager role for the first team within a month or two of him being employed purely to support the academy, which is about the right level for him.

Powell then assists a losing manager for about four years, whom takes a club down from an average of about a 45% win record over 10 years to well under 30%. Powell gets on well with the players who think he is a decent bloke and with McDermott quitting benefits from a honeymoon period as players are happy with the fact he has gone.

He is the only person out of the 24 candidates whom is internal and whilst he is not well especially well placed for the role (as he has coached for only five years in obscure amateur leagues and has no playing background nor contacts outside London) the morale in the camp is happy with the fearsome McDermott gone and besides which as the Chief Executive has a new role lined up, so why not play him in, if you are leaving before the new season starts?

Remarkably everyone is fit at the start of the season and the club get off to a flier against the four other clubs with new coaches (Leeds, Crusaders, St Helens and Catalans) but suddenly Powell has exhausted his lifetime of freak luck on the 20th March 2011. His team don't look motivated prior to the kick-off and a tidal wave of points flood in - the second most amount in over 2000 Super League games.

Obviously he does not have the ability to do anything than fill in for his boss on a temporary basis and by the 1st of August he had seen 1 win, 1 draw and 18 losses against Super League opposition. He has a win record of under 25% despite a great start.

Fans can count on there being a ten minute period in the first half of just about every game where Quins will conceed three tries and effectively be out of the game by the early minutes of the second half, if not sooner.

Of course there will be people who vote to stay the same, but why? This guy has been at the club not one year but pretty much since the first season? What suggests that he has any credentials? The first five games? I don't believe in Powell whatsoever. His appointment was ludicrous.

We must go into the new season with a decent franchise after three years of mediocrity. It has to change. I don't mind what Powell does, but he is not a senior leader, just a young guy who was fortuitous but whose luck has ran out because he didn't have any real credentials other than being a pleasant studious guy whose disposition is suitable for a background role involving no contact with the media, supporters etc.

I am sure we will get people talking as if a role must be found for Powell? Why? It is not as if he has done anything in the game. Unless he has very hidden credentials. I have seen none! It is like one of those video games where you just enter your name and straight away are at a top team!

Mark's post has many valid points. Do people think, given the squad at his disposal, Powell has underachieved this season? Its a geniune question.

Yes, I think he hasn't got the best out of the players at his disposal.
Not a very inspiring figure is he
