Key moment (apart from the Howell incident - senior pros should know better) was the penalty Barnett gave away on Hulls line - silly error but its difficult to blame him. Defence was poor in parts but once Hull had the momentum it was always going to be difficult. Very disappointed with Hull - worst kicking game of most teams seen this season - Long just not with it.... Given their experience all over the park they should be doing better. After last week it was not that bad and with a few things going for us we could have got the win. Good run by Price in the second half but did he do anything else? Lamont not on the pitch for long which was a shame. Still perhaps we are back on the rails after last week - just not going far.

Dorn - was good when with ball in hand, went hands all over the place for Hulls last try, where he got palmed out of the way.
O'Callaghan - Was worked like a work horse, poor under the high ball, but still a solid performance.
Clubb - Was impressive with ball in hand, got side-stepped by Yeaman, for hisfirst, was then moved to the SR in place of Pryce who came into Centre.
Howell - Gave away the stupid penalty that in the end lost us the game, imo.
Melling - Shouldn't be on the wing, took his try well, missed too many tackles for me, including one where he really should of missed in the middle of the field, Calderwood should be on the wing.
Gale - Impressive game, did well.
Randall - Isn't a 7, no matter how long you wait for him to be a 7, he isn't. Rotate him at 9 with Ellis to keep the go-forward
Wilkes - Our best forward, made constant metres when others around him weren't quite doing it.
Ellis - Our best player, when he went off we lacked some attacking flair, but when he came back, and his runs from dummy half, greatly improved our game.
Ward - Was solid, made some metres which is rare for the guy, credit to him.
Bailey - Solid, still impressing me as our best Aussie.
Purdham - Good performance by the CAptain,
Burnett - Still impressive, gave away 2 silly penalties near the end of the game that helped Hull keep the momentum, credit to the lad, he was trying his best to put in a performance against his parent club.

Temata - Solid, made metres
Pryce - Other than the one run he made in the second half, was a passenger for most of the game, seems lazy and didn't come infield to take the ball up once. Not impressed.
Bryan - Only played around 10 minutes, wasn't that effective during his spell, didn't return during the second half.

Cannot for the life of me remember the 4th Sub.

Overall, when we had the ball in hand, we controlled the game well, untill the last 15 minutes, where our play with ball in hand should of been better, stupid last play kicks, really should of been kicking into touch and controlling the pace of the game, instead we got tackled on the last, to strong kicks, needs to improve. But we worked for our tries a lot more, if anything we deserved the win more than Hull, it was our defense that let us down, to many times they ran straight through our defense without a single man touching them, it was embarrasing, sometimes our defense kept them on their 10 metre line for their set of six, and then they miss tackles completely, sort it out boys, your defense lost you the game.

BTW, what is happening with Dave Williams? Was announced he was going on loan, but he's been down here for our last 2 games.

Lack of intelligence was the problem yesterday. Burnett gave away a stupid penalty, Howell allowed himself to get involved with Lauaki on the fifth tackle and give away a penalty - both times with Hull struggling. The team also need to know when to slow the PTB down, even if it means handing a penalty to the oppo - see Hull's winning try. Who are the onfield leaders, this was basic stuff?

I'm going to give Rob Powell a hard time too. Kouparitsas shouldn't be close to the 17 - so ssslloooow at the PTB, dreadful hands, lazy defence. There must be a half-back on the bench from now on so that only Randall and Ellis (who has been sensational in 2011) spend time at DH. And I don't understand the use of Pryce - bringing him on at right centre means making adjustments to the RHS and LHS defences which is crazy. Finally, re. Powell, Purdham was showing signs of fatigue throughout and yet he played 80 mins (I think).

So, for me, Howell and Kouparitsas out with Pryce at 4 and Mellor/Sarginson on the bench. I'm hoping Golden is available for the bench.

It's always hard to put a reason on these sort of results?

Did Quins switch off when they thought that thye had the game won or did Hull dig deep and pull a result out of the bag? Judging from the highlights it would appear that Hull got the rub of the green in the final 20 and were unstoppable. The poor attempts at tackling only hurt the London outfit and Hull had more in the tank and seemed to want the win a lot more.

This could be a big dent in the confidence of the Quins boys after shipping in a cricket score the week before they see a side lacking in confidence go away from home and snatch it from underneath their noses.

This weeks game at Bradford will be a tough ask in my opinion.

Jamie O'Callaghan, a 'solid' performance? What game were you lot watching? The lad is good with ball in hand but his defence is dreadful. Him and Pryce down the right hand side got torn to ribbons, they were useless. Even towards the end, when Chad Randall was visibly hobbling and retreated to the left hand side, Hull STILL attacked us down the right - it was that easy for them.

You have to question Powell's judgement in retaining two players down that side who simply cannot defend while a Great Britain international is whiling away hours in the stands. Very poor decision making from Rob Powell IMO.

Ironically things were going better when Clubb was playing at right centre, he was actually having a decent game as was Howell. When Powell needlessly tinkered and moved Clubb to the left, things went to pot.

Ellis was outstanding, I thought everyone else, particularly Gale, was patchy. A mixed bag but a game we should have won - Hull were very average and were playing with only one proper Half in Sean Long, who they seem to rely upon for any direction. Criminal last 20 has cost us and any illusion of us reaching the top 10 will pass very quickly unless we beat teams like this. A lot for the team (and Powell especially) to learn....

I was worried this could be more of the same from last week, but it wasn’t. The last 20mins were very poor but we played some really excellent attacking and defensive rugby early on and that says a lot about the way they had moved on. In fact we bombed two gilt edged chances down either wing, the first when Melling was tackled short, I suggest Calderwood would have had the speed to score.

We have played 7, lost 3 (unfortunately 2 of those have been at home) – would we have been happy with that at the start of the season, I suggest we would. We just need to get the train back on the tracks fully and I certainly think a win against Bradford and / or Wakefield is on the cards.

On a separate note Powell said

"We have to learn to be a lot smarter as we controlled the game for spells and deserved more."

And therein lies the problem. For 3 years now we have not needed to close out a close game as we have largely been on the rack and well behind on the scoreboard. Even this season, we had built up such big leads against out of sorts teams we didn’t really need to close the game, but we still managed to let Leeds (2), Saints (2), Catalans (1) run in late tries and put ourselves under unnecessary pressure. I guess this comes with experience and that’s something that you cant buy, unfortunately it comes from losing in the way we did yesterday.

As a footnote, I thought the Hull support was excellent in number and voice, well done Airlie Birds.

The problems with the RHS defence can't be laid at JOC's door. Purdham at 4th man in was exhausted at 60 mins (probably earlier), Gale at 3rd man in is one of weakest defenders we have and starting with Clubb and switching to Pryce at 2nd man in is asking for trouble. By the time JOC is asked to do anything, the RHS defence has already been busted due to individual misses/poor communication/poor decision-making. Teams will continue to target the gap either side of Gale I'm afraid and he needs to build a relationship with his centre (Clubb) and he needs a high-energy defender inside him (Purdham to start, Golden as an option to spell).

It was the first of these that was the turning point for me. 30-16 up, Hull well and truly on the ropes and seemingly not having had the ball in hand in our half since before the first of our three quick tries. One of their blokes makes to play the ball no more than five yards from his own line and Burnett just walks into him and taps the ball away. Why? There was no need to slow the play down, it's not as if they might have launched a rapid attack against a broken field. They gained a good thirty yards from that penalty, then forced another set near our line with a high kick to the corner which we knocked on, and scored off that. From that moment Hull suddenly looked far more confident. The Howell penalty was brainless too, especially as he'd done well to bring the bloke down in the first place, but the game was already back in the balance by this point for me.

At 30 - 16 my friend turned to me and said "that's the match then". I told him it was too early and that Quins could lose it.

Sadly I was right.

The burnett penalty on the Hull line actually i think was pretty harsh although I was a fair distance away. It was a handover! there is no reason that they should be allowed to play the ball quickly and most refs should allow the defence to set, it looked to me like Burnett was only trying to get back to the defensive line, it is very different from having completed a tackle and then not getting out of the way
But!! like i say I was at the other end of the stand so could be wrong and the ref was closer

icon_iamwithstupid.gif Hull were poor and out on their feet up to the penalty.

Tackling was our achillies heel yesterday. It was pretty much non existant.

I see the "AGAR OUT" poster that was at the back of the North stand prior to the match disappeared quickly.

I'm not sure our tackling was that bad(accepting what happened in the last 10 mins)- We had sets where we held them to 20 and 30 metres from there line- Where we seemed to struggle was once the line was broke we couldn't adjust- Both of there first 2 tries came from breaks we broke down but couldnt stop the next wave.

That was a real bad loss for several reasons.

Ellis was excellent, we lost direction when he went of, Ward did about 70 mins of hard graft, Clubby looks better at centre than in the past.

No point me going over all that's been said again but just to agree with most of it is the easy way.

On the Randall/Ellis issue for who goes where when eliis goes of. Well like most here i don't no what game RP's watching but by now he must see what we the fans see that Nick the Greek is a forward but sure is no Hooker. I try to count how many times the forwards had to stop their runs because he was to slow at the PTB, he gives knocks on from that position so many times due to his size and having to bend down for it.

Why cant he if hes going to spell Ellis move Randall to Hooker (like we ask) and then have Bailey move to SO and if he has to have Nick the Greek in the 17 on the bench then bring him on at LF.

On Jamie C and his knock on which lead to the Hull try. I sit up in the Disabled Balcony and this happened right in front of me. Yes he should have made more of a jump for it or at least got the Hull player, but TBH some of this blame should fall to Pryce as well he was stood in front of Jamie he make to go forward and then just stopped and left it at last minute to Jamie C. IMO Pryce should have called and gone for it as he is twice the size of Briscoe and could have got the ball alot easier then Jamie C.

A couple of thing which worry me is the fittest levels, and playing Randall/Purds for the full 80 minutes. If RP going to rota Ellis then maybe he should when he bring Ellis back on be swapping him for Randall to give him a rest and the same said for Purds, i noticed RP rests Baliey when maybe its Purds who needs it more.

Going into the Bulls game some hard choices are going to have to be made. He cant mess with the team to much. but if Golden is fit then he needs to be the bench and if hes not then maybe Melling drops to the bench (he can cover most positions in the team even Hooker) and have Calderwood on the wing. I wont say if he had been there in place of Melling when he got held up or he would have scored it,but you cant help feel that the odds would have been more in Calderwoods favour if it had been him there.

If none of these choices are available then maybe bring back Ben Bolger/Krasniqi or even take a chance and blood young Tomas that a few others have talked about on here and seen play. I would say Mellor but i dont think hes come back from Wigan or even coming back so the final option would be Sarginson, but as i dont know much about him i will see what others have to say about him and if they feel he ready for the step up to the first team.
