Our own stadium? That's a new one. Seems ambitious.
Personally I like The Stoop and as long as we're called Harlequins, we should play there IMO

Black Backgrounds/Zoot.gif Freedom for supporters of the government, only for members of one party - however numerous they may be - is no freedom at all. freedom is always and exclusively for one who thinks differently.

| All for having our own ground as sharing causes all sorts of problems in any sport, it's interesting to read that the RFL are trying to help as well (only given their level of competence we'd probably end up somewhere like Bamako!). I also supect that if we did find somewhere we wouldn't be at the Stoop for the next three years.

Our own ground? Where? How would we afford it? Do they mean a new stadium or playing at somewhere like Crystal Palace? Forgive me for having a lack of vision but I'm puzzled as to how we'd achieve it given our current state.

| I read this more of a general ideal answer to a question posed, which given our transient past will always be asked IMO, what is slightly different and no doubt being considered at some level is post 2012 and opportunities arising for investment on the back of a succesful games.
In an ideal world we would own our own ground which would have a 365 revenue stream and we should not be scared of another move where all the required elements he lists have been put into place, the problem in the past has been moving grounds because we have been forced to by forces outside the clubs control. You also have to colour the comments with the current Trinity/Crusaders situation, where Trin are being shafted because they have no tangible assets [like us in our current situation] but Crusaders could cut a reasonable deal as they own the ground.

| Hats off to him for thinking longer term! Maybe this indicates the Quins thing is not working. I understand this was in Gus's remit when he started. How we will finance it, lord knows, but if Salford and Cas can do it why not us?

| If we can't make the current set up work, then nothing will ever work. It would be madness to even consider moving away from our current location. All efforts should be directed into making what we have work, rather than dreaming up new plans.

Maybe the club doesn't have the choice.

| Think Mr Lister is correct. Moving isnt the answer. we need to build crowds and success were we are, if we suceed than yes a groumnd of our own would be great, but where will the money come from to build a superleague standard stadium - we are talking serious money!

Even though this is a theoretical debate, that is a small minded comment which takes no account for what other considerations are, or could be in play.
For instance
Current costs of staying where we are coupled with little to no ongoing revenue streams by use of the facilities outside of 14 game days.
Investment from a council [only way to contemplate a move imo] in a sports arena in an area currently not served well, riding on the back of a "feel good" Olympics. [some forward thinking required there given current public sector finances]
Perceived understanding that despite all good intentions West London/Twickenham will probably never come to embrace this sport enough as a community.
If we stay as we are under the circumstances we operate in, then we will never be able to be anything other than a hand to mouth outfit.

| I think it's obvious to Hughes that being Harlequins RL is not a tenable option in the long term. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a re-branding in 2012 in anticipation of a possible move. A stadium where you are the primary owners would be ideal, rent wouldn't be a big issue, nobody can kick you out, and you could take the earnings from the bars/food.

| Unless DH has found a load of money down the back of the sofa or won the Euromillions I don't know how we can have our own ground, much as though I would love to see it.
I'm wondering if in the absence of Mark Evans at HRU are they less keen on having us around ? Is DH picking up a vibe that they want us to move out? I think the Stoop is a great stadium, in truth its the only thing about our becoming Harlequins that I like, but I wouldn't shed a single tear if we ended our current situation of having their name and their colours , and being able to move to our own ground as a stand alone London RLFC!
Thing is where would we go? Finding somewhere in London ain't gonna be easy (just ask AFC Wimbledon) so without ground sharing at another football club (maybe at a revamped Crystal Palace, without the running track?) the only other option I can think of would be if we could take over one of the Olympic facilities such as the hockey stadium post 2012. And thats going to start the 'we can't move away from West London' arguments !
The fact DH is actually going public about this is making me think our landlords want us to move on, maybe he's looking to get us a better long term deal elsewhere?

| Is Tesco looking to build a store anywhere near by but having issues with planning?
They like to chuck in a "community" stadium to get around planning.

Funny you should say that, they were looking to build on the site of the old Woolwich Building Society HQ at Bexleyheath some time ago. Bit of a pig to get to on public transport though as there's no train or tube nearby.
