THE PERFECT FRIDAY NIGHT OUT IS BACK!

• FNL to be played 28th August on eve of Carnegie Challenge Cup Final
• Skolars aiming for a record attendance of 2000 spectators
• Skolars to launch ‘Skolars are my second club!’ campaign

Friday 28th August at 6.30 pm will see the London Skolars 2009 regular season conclude with the traditional precursor to the Carnegie Challenge Cup Wembley Final, Friday Night Lights! In a repeat of the 2008 event, the Skolars will once again meet Keighley Cougars and are hoping to avenge the narrow 14-18 loss they suffered.

The event has proved popular with the Rugby League masses travelling to the capital for the game’s showpiece occasion. With a sell out attendance of 1,427 for the 2008 event, the club are going all out to top that and attract a second consecutive club record crowd and have expanded capacity to 2000 with the aim to sell out. The Skolars will be launching their “Skolars are my second club” campaign.

Also included on the day will be the finals of the Skolars ‘Urban Rugby’ programme, Estate of Origin! With a steel band, Skolars girls, Barbeque, fan games and competitions and the always popular real ale festival it promises to be the biggest and best yet.

Skolars chairman Hector McNeil commented, “Friday Night Lights continues to go from strength to strength and with the invention of the Skolars staff they’re coming up with some really fun and exciting initiatives for the event itself. We’re confident it’ll be another sell out and are looking forward to opening up both sides of our ground for the first time.”

Skolars Community Manager and first team captain Paul Thorman said, “The Urban Rugby Estate of Origin finals series will provide an opportunity for local children to become part of Rugby League’s biggest weekend of the year. As a squad we’re looking to go one better than last year’s narrow loss and get over Keighley.”

Advance bookings are £10 and entrance on the night is £12, concessions £6.

For information and bookings contact Paul Thorman on 020 8888 8488 or e-mail paulthorman@skolarsrl.com. See www.skolarsrl.com for further information and Skolars news.

No offense mate but after the way your lot acted over this fixture don't expect a favorable reaction here.

You should know what BG means.

Whilst the person who runs the Skolars has their best interest at heart, there were a number of people in varying positions of management/influence who thought that this event may have had a better outcome if held at TW2, with Skolars game/Quins game (v Bradford), beer festival, estate of origin (kwality name by the way), live bands etc etc etc...
The fact that the Skolars dismissed this idea, which they were entitled to do, in my honest opinion, does them no favours. We will get the usual 3,500/4,000 for the rescheduled game v Bradford and Skolars may get their 2,000, but I believe that if combined, we could have added at least another 1,500 to the overall total. Skolars would have raised their profile and received more cash. The Game iin London itself may well have got a bit of a boost too.
As it is, the Heritage day you held was (again IMO) not the success that Skolars had hoped for. It added 300 to your gate and you got tonked on the pitch. It was my first (and probably last) visit to watch the Skolars and whilst I applaud the work being done in North East London, we really should be working together more.
As for the Capital Challenge.....I wonder how many city types would turn up to that to see Skolars v Broncos? Not as many as Skolars v HARLEQUINS I would think.

Not saying it isn't a great evening PP. Just pointing out that pulling in the same direction is a lot easier than pulling in diferent directions...that's all.
I have no doubt that they will get close to their 2,000 and then revert to 290 odd for home games next season.

No-one (or a tiny proportion of the total crowd) will have bothered going to the Skolars part if it was a double header. They do right IMO. I'd be tempted to go to the Skolars event if I didn't have other plans - a double header in TW2 wouldn't have interested me in the slightest.

Plus if I was a Skolars fan i'd be a little bit put out at moving their biggest home game of the season to the opposite side of London. Some massive arrogance from Quins fans over this I reckon.

So what? A double header would be nothing more than a short term cash boost.

Can anyone who was at the fans forum confirm these points:

a/ The fact that the club were in discussion with the Skolars over the possibility of the event being moved to TW2 was mentioned at the Forum.
b/ At the forum, it was stated that this move was supported by various people but probably wouldn't happen as the skolars weren't too sure of the benefit to them.
c/ DH or PB went on record at this forum as saying 9,000 would have been the targeted/estimated crowd for this.

I would appreciate it if someone could confirm or deny these points as AGAIN I seem to be a pariah icon_rolleyes.gif

like always these things are only half in the public domain. yes quins approached skolars with the idea as a one off game. (dont forget quins cant plan to get knocked out every year.) and it was considered and discussed very carefully by both sets of management.

skolars considered it and even invited the Quins GM to present to the board. it was considered but it was felt that a huge amount of time and effort had gone into the game over the years and a relatively successful event has been achieved. a chance for players, sponsors (inc Haringey Council), speccies etc to showcase the game in North London would have been given up to play a one of game that may or may not have generated a big crowd.

it was not an easy decision as quins and skolars mgt are working well together and we want to do more together very well and a double header will defo be on the cards for next year.

the 9000 crowd sounds doable but is not a guaranteed success but a New River sell out is very likely.

i hope that helps.

I shan't be there but I think Skolars have made the right decision. Good luck to them, hope it goes well.

Media coverage for a London league doubleheader on the weekend of the cup final would have been a lot more than either club would ever normally get.
That's one reason to have it.
another is the increased gate as a one of and the long term rub off of above on overall follow-up coverage.
two games for the price of one is always a good thing.
So is a beer festival.
It would also have helped skolars long term as it would have introduced them to the wider london rl community.
