Big Day planned at Skolars on Sat

A truly historic day for rugby league and sport is closing in. The highly ambitious venture that is Toronto Wolfpack will kick off their campaign to dominate the World of Rugby league by playing London Skolars at New River Stadium on the White Hart Lane on March 4th 2.30 p.m.

The game kicks off the Kingstone Press League 1 season and a record crowd is expected to descend on Wood Green, North London. Ticket sales have been very strong and have included purchases from as far afield as Holland, Germany and of course Canada. Many true rugby league supporters are also making every effort to be there and be able to say in years to come they were there when the Wolfpack made their debut.

With much anticipation surrounding the match, which will be broadcast live throughout the United Kingdom on Premier Sports, the Skolars are hopeful that a bumper crowd will be in attendance for the match.

The New River Stadium has recently had a £5m face lift, which includes a new clubhouse, offices and gym for the Skolars and a superb new 3g pitch. The facilities are as good as most in League 1 if not most of the Championship. This development really does also show Skolars ambitions to organically improve on and off the field.

The day will be a festival of rugby league with up to 20 London & South East junior league teams taking part in a 9s tournament in the morning at the Under 16 & 18 age groups. Later a Masters Festival involving Masters RL teams from across the South will add to the occasion.

Alongside the extensive festival of rugby, there will also be lots to keep people entertained on the day. The Bryan Adams Experience will also be playing before and after half time. They are one of the UK’s premier tribute acts and will no doubt keep the crowd entertained as the action takes a rest on the field.

In what has become a permanent fixture at London Skolars events, a wide selection of Real Ale will be available in the fans zone. Alongside this, there will be BBQs and other food points. A late bar will be in place also, for those who want to carry on into the evening.

Skolars showed great promise last year to finish in the top 8 and consolidating their position as the leading Southern based side in League 1. The side is largely the same as last year with some key additions such as barn storming Lamont Bryan and ex-Brisbane Bronco Simona Vavega. The coaching team is once again ably led by Head Coach Jermaine Coleman who feels he learnt valuable lessons from last year’s campaign.

The World of Rugby League will be expecting Toronto to walk the game especially after their solid 26 – 20 to Challenge Cup Champions Hull a few weeks ago. However Skolars hope to spring a surprise by hosting the Wolfpack first up and also playing at home on the familiar New River pitch.

Jac Davies the clubs GM had this to say “The game against Toronto is being keenly anticipated by the Rugby World. We are proud we can welcome them to New River & the World Famous White Hart Lane. It should be an awesome day and event and we would encourage all rugby fans to come and witness it. Whether you are a Skolars or Toronto fan we want to see you all out in full. Plus we would encourage fans across the game from League 1, Championship, Super League, the amateur game and beyond to make sure they are here to enjoy the day.

Match kicks off at 2.30 pm. Pre match events start at 10am.

Entrance is £12 for adults & £6 concessions. Tickets can be bought here https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kingstone- ... f=efbevent

What's the car parking like at the ground on Saturdays, Elite? Especially with the big crowd you're expecting.

A bit off topic I know but are the Toronto side helped in anyway by the Rfl as some of their staff on Twitter in their profiles say they are employed by the Wolfpack and the Rfl. If so you can see why they are getting so much media coverage.Shame they didn't help London so much in regards to marketing.

I think their media coverage is down to professionalism, hardwork and the unique story that they are able to tell.

London cannot lay the blame at the feet of the RFL on this one. While they may be an average governing body, they arent to blame for the state of our club.

Am interested why anyone would expect the RFL to help with marketing broncos compared to Toronto. We have been going 35 plus years Toronto are brand new therefore newsworthy.
Why are they getting so much media coverage? Because it's news! It gets Rugby League on prime time news channel. Premier have decided to show all their games, why? Because it's newsworthy!
5 years time assuming they are still going then see how much coverage they get.
Not sure it's down to any professionalism at the club, nothing we could do at Broncos would increase our TV coverage.

Wolfpack (and Eric Perez) have been a breath of fresh air in this stale sport of ours.

Agree, great to have someone involved in the game thats not of the regular insular thinking mould. Understands that for their dream to thrive they need to bring the rest of the league and sport up with them.

The involvement of Eric Perez cannot be a bad thing for our sport. He might end up ruffling a few feathers, but good luck to him. The top of the game needs sorting out anyway.

Isn't that what we said about the good doctor at Salford.
I really do hope this whole venture succeeds, it will be interesting to see what the Toronto public think about it in a years time. As for other north American teams and thus venture it's all good and we'll as long as they have deep pockets to pay for the away team travel but when they stop paying then asking teams like Coventry Hemel Oxford etc to sustain the costs of transport for a trans Atlantic competition might be a step to far.
Funny though with Mr Perez is he not just a very rich man with a rugby league team as his personal toy, thought we disapproved of that sort of thing?

If that was so, then he wouldn't bother marketing his club both in Canada and the UK, would he? He'd just set it up, enter the comp, play the games, enjoy watching them, perhaps hope a few others come along too, and that would be that.

In truth, he couldn't be further removed from David Hughes. He's doing absolutely everything possible to promote the club, to attract investors (he's Chairman but the main money comes from other people he's brought on board) to generate corporate and supporter interest, and to make a mark in the game. A game he came to almost by chance in Canada, when it was first getting started and he helped out with some promotional work. He's even sold his business to put this thing together. Eric Perez and the Toronto Wolfpack are probably the best chance the game has of ever breaking out of the North of England and the small town / small time mentality that pervades. I hope they rocket through the leagues into SL, and in the process encourage others to follow them.

Feel I touched a nerve there!
As I said I hope it succeeds but and it's a big but! With clubs in championship that cannot afford to make ends meet as it is I struggle to see how it's financially viable for clubs to afford an Atlantic crossing to play a game it's hard enough for em to afford toulouse. We travel up and down to the m62 to keep costs down nothing else
As for my point of it being a rich man's plaything, I don't know any other sport where the home team would cover all the costs of everyone to come to them!

I have followed the LONDON CLUB since I was in my teensl even though born in St Helens and still live nearby and went to the first game at Fulham, also Big West Ham Supporter:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_1649.jpg

Well only this week the RFL have stated they are willing to consider existing Super League clubs moving to major Cities to play their home games?

I congratulate the Toronto owner, season ticket sales are amazing as well as merchandise, he is doing something right.

IF we do not start making some serious progress as a game I think we better look backwards and go semi professional again, as we are not developing and getting the high financial backers we need to go forward.

The statement re big city "franchise" move seems very odd. Yes it has worked for wasps RU and a lot of there fans seem happy to travel up the m40 for games. If you move for example, widnes to Birmingham how many widnes fans would follow them down there every week I would suggest a big fat zero! It would have to be a new club.
Big city rugby I did think London was a big city.

The only way I could see this ever happening would be by ripping up what we have and starting again, then have a regional top flight competition. East Yorkshire (hull & hull kr) West Yorkshire (Leeds Bradford cas wakey) maybe even just one yorks team in big city Leeds, lancs (Wigan wire widnes) big city Manchester, then you could have Cumbria team big city hmmmm, NE team in newcastle, E mids nottingham or leicester, West mids birmingham, south West bristol, Wales Cardiff, SE London. But where are the fans coming from? It's never gonna happen in my life time.
If the RFL seriously though this was the way ahead then they should have said to Bradford "why not start up a new club elsewhere "?
