| This point was raised in another post but I will link it to the feelings that I had when Powell was appointed; those being that it was a continuation of the existing coaching team, minus the head coach, which for my money only gives the rookie coach himself to look to for answers.
I am more than willing to give Powell time to prove he is more than an acolyte of Brian Mac, but he must look to learn from the mistakes made from mid 2009 onwards. At this point in time he only has Latham Tawhai to go for answers, an unremarkable player and head coach, but by all accounts a solid assistant. He had Phil Jones at his side yesterday, and he seems great at getting the youngsters involved, but he is not necessarily the answer to first-team on-field guidance.
I am loathe to suggest following the convoluted rugby union setup of director of rugby, but with a novice head coach I believe it to be a step forward. This is not a call to replace him by any stretch of the imagination, but I do believe he does need to get outside assistance, or perhaps just a little advice.
People have suggested Brian Noble who is doing media work and may retain some warmth towards the Crusaders, but may be willing to do a few days work a week, not necessarily on matchday or with the first-team if it were to undermine our man, but RP does in my eyes need that little advice as he doesn't have his own top-level experience to draw on.
The other suggestion is Tony Rea, who obviously has clear links to this club, and was exemplary in his transitional role when Brian Mac came in. He seemed to be someone the then rookie head coach McDermott could bounce ideas off and help him stamp his own authority in the role. Rea seems to surplus to requirements at the Brumbies for next year and would be available within six weeks.
A temporary summer role may suit Tony Rea who has the top job at Brumbies, but will be replaced by former South Africa coach Jake White at the end of the Super 15 season. Whether Rea wants a coaching job in either code, a return to the Stoop would be a temporary one, and one that would benefit the club that he clearly has an affection for.
Whether Rea wants to recharge his batteries with (our) summer off before another crack at a top job is really up to him, but I think David Hughes should give him a confidential telephone call and ask him to give Powell the little bit of guidance he needs.

| So we make up for the shortcomings of our current coach by bringing in someone else "above" him? Ludicrous. Get rid of Powell and bring in the likes of Noble/Rea. We owe Powell nothing.

| A 'Director' seems to be the way to go these days - it means EVERYONE singing from the same hymn sheet. Be it in an unofficial or official capacity.
Quins simply need a 'style' of play from bottom to top - if the 'Director' can achieve this - then i dont see an issue with it.

| The only possible negative aspect of it would be that of cost to our club.

| I don't see how we can afford not too. I have never known so many old Fulhamites leave early. If this goes on we will struggle for a quorum by August. Anyway, we lost Mac and have not got an extra body to replace him, so we have been saving since last September.

| Think there's some mileage in this idea. A sounding board and 'mentor' for RP. Someone of experience who could combine it with media work e.g. Noble - we wouldn't be able to afford him on a full-time basis.

| I think help is urgently needed in the coaching department. Rob Powell is probably the least experienced coach ever to take charge of a Super League club (has he ever even played the game at a serious professional level?) and he is in charge of one of the weakest squads in the competition. That doesn't mean he has no potential, but it is obvious that he is struggling to know what to do at the moment.
I don't think any coach could turn this team into title contenders, but someone with really good experience at the top level could at least advise on how to correct obvious shortcomings and repeated basic errors, and help to get the best out of the squad on a regular basis.
Unless the club has already written this season off, a 3 or 4 month consultancy from someone like Brian Noble or Tony Rea would be ideal. There are lots of other high quality Aussie coaches who could do a good job for us short term. It could even include Skolars who seem to be part of our player development set up and who also have an inexperienced coach.
Number one priority would be to sort out the Quins first team, but advice wcould be helpful at all levels.

| I know this a thread on a director of rugby to give powell some advice, but money and who it could be is a problem as all have already said.
But i was watching the Union lot of TV over the weekend and i have to say and also those who were doing the commentary also mentioned this. But their defence was awesome. They moved up in a line as one unit and didnt allow the other team any time on the ball when it was fed to their backs, not hanging back like ours have started to do alot as we know and picked up on sky the other night not for the first time either by them or others.
Now before anyone jumps on my back and tells me i dont know nothing and that defence in Union is nothing like it is in League, i do kind of know that ok but always willing to be told otherwise but thoses who know more then me on this
But to me defence is defence no matter who teaches it and over the years Union have stolen ideas or defence coaches from League if i remember right. So kind of what im saying in a long windy way is, the Union season is nearing an end so in a way the club have people there in place who could maybe help out if we ask. I cant see the harm in them trying this because who ever is in change of the defence side of the Quins Union lot has done a good job there, and just maybe could give the guys some new ideas in training to get them back on track.
Right will stand back and and wait for the abuse to come my way for such a silly idea...

That doesn't count much when you consider it was only Shaun McRae, and Malcolm Alker. Vievers has learnt his trade at Wigan, under Noble, so he's better qualified than RP.

| BBC website is reporting this now with Nobby in talks about joining 'Fax on a part time basis (ie a couple of days a week). Funny thing is they're on a similar run of form to ours, the difference is it looks like they're trying to do something about it!

If the RU defensive coach can do something for us then I've no problem with it. I can't get my head around the whole defence thing this season, at the start of the season it was really good but just a few short months later.......

The difference is that Noble probably lives within a bus journey of Halifax, hence a part time role is viable.
