Go back to the days of winter rugby and 99% of forwards had a fair amount of grease on them particularly when playing on hard grounds. I suspect it was more to do with the surface than anything else. There's a picture of Kevin Ward coming out of the tunnel at Knowsley Road back in the 80's covered in the stuff.
