| Quins got a decent work out for a first game. In particular Skolars had a lot of the game for the first half hour and for a long time it was just 12-6. Some random observations from the game:-
1) Ganson was ref and was very whistle happy giving plenty of penalties
2) Mike Burnett looked very impressive running out wide
3) When he entered the fray young prop Rob Thomas also looked impressive with line busting runs
4) Initially our new Aussies struggled with ball retention but Chris Bailey in particular looked more than useful in later spells
5) Nice to see Mark Calderwood on the field in Quins colours

No surprise there then !!! Must have been bloody confusing for him, reffing two London clubs on the same pitch together. His dilemma was who to give the penalties against.........oh no....wait.....they naturally went against us !!!!
I take it that Mr Ganson got a taxi to the station safely ???

| now now lets not start having a go at the ref!
all the penalties were as per the rules of the game! In the second half he let the game flow a little bit more giving the boys a little more lea way in the tackle and time to release.
Observations!
Too many penalties given away, Mr Ganson set his stall out very early and blew up for not releasing quick enough! Profesional players should be able to react to that. If you lay on/turtle/or have a hand on the ball in a normal tackle then you will be penalised
Players need to know the rules of the game, whats the difference with a surrender/dominant and normal tackle and what they can do when they are called.
Skolars looked pretty competative in the first half and some bloody good hits went in!
What was nice was support play when the guys broke the line

You say that in one breath and then say Ganson didn't blow so much in the second half-surely therefore thats interpretation of the rules and not the rules-And there lies the problem

I think if you watch all games the play the ball slows down as the game goes on, due to fatigue on both sides!
The ref will generally call the tackle complete! either by calling the tackle count! or something along the lines of "stand up" then the tackle count if its a dominant or surrender tackle! this is when the player should move if they have not already.
In the quote you highlighted, the ref did blow in the second half a couple of times for quins players spinning on top of a grounded player, this is what I am referring to with players knowing the rules, you can only do this on certain type of tackle!!!
In my opinion he did blow too much in the first half but it was the same for both teams so I dont think we have any complaints. In the second half he allowed the game to run a bit more, and again was the same with both teams! Thats all really you can ask!

So you are saying the ref was consistent in his making it up as he went along ?

| it could have been down to the fact the players realised that they were breaking the rules of the game and errr maybe stopped doing it as much so the ref did not have to blow as much

| I just think its quite funny, we run in 70 points but we still knock the officials, the boys give away probably half a dozen penalties that they should not have done, they were correct calls on the penalties! you cant blame Ganson for that! We never seem to be able to play to how the officials interpret the rules! If a ref blows early in a game for laying on then dont do it for rest of the game.
If another ref allows a bit more time, then use it! Its called smart rugby.
Ganson has the reputation for being keen to blow, especially for not releasing quick enough!! Why dont the players play to that!? Its not as if its the first time he has reffed us!!!
Anyhow enough of that.
Lets see how we get on against Leigh! I would like to see 50 points
