Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. (Winston Churchill):d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_40218.jpg

Quote: Dave Lister "So how did WE make the game a turgid one? You dropped ball and cocked things up, same as us (although probably not as much as us actually). Difference was, as Saints fans our eyes were on our own team mostly, which was unfortunate because we all fell into a coma by the second half.

When teams make lots of mistakes - and both Quins and Saints did make a number of mistakes - one of two things can happen. There can be added excitement or the whole thing can slide down into a bit of a scrappy mess. I'd say the latter happened on this occasion. That isn't a comment against Quins or a reflection of how much Saints have turned into a moody team (which is actually true but it isn't the point of the comment). It is simply my own opinion on the way in which both teams played and the resultant nature of the game. Obviously YMMV, but that's how I perceived the match.

In our last meeting Saints weren't a whole lot better but somehow there was much more zing to the whole thing. As I said, this isn't about my opinion on Saints or on Quins but on the match.

And none of that takes anything away from the other element of the OP: your fans were great. Ours were dire. Me included.

Quote: Prince of Denmark "At Saints yesterday the home crowd resembled a cricket crowd with polite ripples of applause and mild cheering when points were scored. '"

That's a good way of looking at it. But don't forget, the ripples of applause were for your tries as well as our own. We clapped with much gusto at two of Catlans' tries last weekend, and we lost to them.

Quote: Prince of Denmark "I get the feeling a lot of supporters of these clubs take success for granted and anything less than unadulterated glory represents some kind of crisis.'"

That's a very snobby comment and also one which reveals petty jealousy IMO. Saints have indeed been a fine team since the start of superleague and of course Saints fans have their expectations as a result. On that pitch representing my club were players, the majority of whom had played at Grand Finals and Challenge Cup finals and some of them had even won. I think if the roles were reversed and you were the club whose team were performing poorly at almost every match - and that is the case with Saints this season - you too would be disappointed because you would expect more of Grand Final winners. I don't think there is a thing wrong with that.

But it doesn't change the fact that both teams made mistakes and didn't get their respective acts together overall, and on this occasion that slowed the match down. As I said above.

Quote: Prince of Denmark "I didn’t think the Quins’ performance was “turgid”, although admittedly I'm accustomed to a lower level of performance than the average Saints fan from the team I follow over a period of many seasons. I felt we were naïve and sloppy at times, but we attempted to play entertaining rugby and apart from the result I enjoyed our performance, especially for the first 25 minutes of the second half when I felt we fought back superbly until Gale’s dropped pass handed the initiative back to the opposition by allowing them to score their first points of the half. I’m not especially interested in any perceived St Helens shortcomings; after having a fantastic side a few years back they’ve unsurprisingly regressed and with several first choice players missing they look relatively ordinary, but yesterday they still did enough to win. So what? Welcome to the real world.'"

Well said. I really enjoyed our performance yesterday. As you said, we played excellent rugby at times and really gave them a game in the second half. Unfortunately, the dropped pass turned the momentum of the game but still turgid is hardly the right word to describe our performance. St Helens, even with players missing, are a good side but we more than managed to stay with them for three quarters of the match.

I wasn't calling out the Quins performance, just the spectacle, or lack of, on the field as a whole.

That’s fair enough, but it emphasises the different perspectives of supporters of different clubs, and coming on here describing the game as turgid when most of our travelling supporters felt we’d played relatively well with an understrength side isn’t likely to strike a chord or find much empathy. You’re probably going to finish outside the top two for the first time in ages and the level of entertainment from your team on Sunday was below what Saints fans are accustomed to, and for that matter below what I’ve witnessed on your visits to The Stoop in recent years, but you still won and you’re still in the top three. We haven’t finished in the top half of the table (6th) since 2005. I’d bite your hand off for Saints current level of mediocrity!
