Please read the article before replying.
Huddersfield finished top in 1932 but lost to the 2nd placed team, Saints in the playoff.
In 1962 when Huddersfield last won the title, they won it from 4th in the league, beating Wakefield.
When you talk about playoff being a new thing - they have been a part of rugby league much longer than you and I have.
to quote the last lines of the article

Leeds fans act like rugby wasn't invented until superleague, many Wigan fans are oblivious to the structure of rugby league before the 1980s!

My post was a little tongue in cheek, but you are right: the club promoted either by winning their league get a trophy, the club promoted for finishing in second place gets no trophy and the club promoted via the play-offs gets a trophy and additional revenue from the play-off games and a trip to Wembley. I am not sure which of these situations Brettykenny' logic would find meaningless... |

Even of we lost tonight i would still be confident of finishing above Wigan.
I think the Giants will win their last three games
Wigan will struggle in their last three pariculalry as one will be the week before and one the week after Wembley.
So i actually think if the Giants dont finish top it will be Warrington not Wigan who beat them to it.

Er, no it isn't. Do your research on how RL champions have been decided since day 1. The vast majority have been under a playoff system. Both finishing top and winning the GF are achievements in their own right, and ones which examine slightly different things. The LLS tests consistency over a season, squad management, stamina, etc. The GF and playoffs test that 'big game mentality', and ability to raise your game under pressure. It also gives the sport a great spectacle and event in the GF, and gives our players another "big game" to get experience in for the international stage (in theory!). The structure of the playoff system however, is up for debate. |

The playoffs have existed for donkeys years- but the emphasis on them has changed- and I think that IS down to "superleague" (and sky).
