Only if we are currently paying him more than £175,000 a year. It's not a free player it means that you can apply a salary of £100,000 to a club trained or £175,000 to a non club trained player. We could count Eorl's new contract as £100,000, for example, if it exceeds that amount. The wording is a bit vague as it says clubs can sign a player from 2016 so i don't know if that means a new signing, a new contract to an existing player or if you can actually just nominate a marquee player.

Doesn't really matter it's a **** idea anyway.

I think you will find that the cap was brought in to make all teams equal in the money they could spend on players.

This marquee player issue is just the wealthier clubs getting around the salary cap - simple as that. Cannot see any positive in this and will be very interested to see who these marquee players actually are - suspect they will not be high enough profile to affect attendance or anything.

Nothing much will change really, the same sides will still win everything. At least on the upside we will get the chance to see some top class players hopefully. League needs to keep the S Tomkins quality players over here, and more like him.

Stupid idea- the junior amateur game is already losing players to union- this isn't going to stem that flow- just make it heavier.

The salary cap has not gone up for years and we are losing players to Australia and Union. However this in my opinion is just an ill thought out gimmick open to abuse.
I don't think increasing the salary cap is going to stop this loss of players and I don't agree with an increase. However if you are going to increase the money available for players salaries why not just stick another £100k on the salary cap. That makes it easy to monitor. What we have instead is a gimmick that will be difficult to monitor.

Indeed and sticking another 100k on the cap is less likely to lead to clubs putting all their financial eggs in one basket and finding its a duck!
Stick a bit extra on the cap every couple of years, allows clubs to keep up rather than widening the gap between the haves and have nots.
