And Mellor may also be high on the count, but if he is missing on three or four tries, then that's the stat that counts'"
I’m more bothered about effort tbh. It’s clear we don’t have the most skilful of players in our squad- but you can make up for some of that with effort. I can forgive any player that missed a tackle after putting in 40. Less so if it’s missed after putting in 2.
No half back should have to make 33 tackles- if that’s happening someone else is lacking in effort.

Exactly!! Where's the loose forward to help him out? And who was his second rower on that edge??

| Faz has to make so many tackles as Salford targeted him, he should have had more protection but the plan was always tongetbat him, Mellor and Turner didn’t do him any favours, stats won’t tell you how both were caught out of position time and time again

Same old story, what you will find as in previous seasons is when the players start coming back morale is shot so we keep on losing.
I'm sorry but we accept garbage far too easily at Huddersfield. I've waited to post for a few days because i was absolutely fuming at the guff we served up on Friday night. First game of the seasons, AT HOME, against a side most tip to be in the bottom 2 and we were absolutely shocking. We were nowhere near winning that game, and although we had injuries there is absolutely no excuse for :
1) Shocking line speed in defence
2) Barely managing to get out of our 20 without a penalty
3) Getting dominated in every aspect of the game
When i saw team sheet i was worried that Farrell would be terrible like last time he played, but he fully deserved man of the match. They targetted him all night in defence and he stepped up to the mark, and had some really nice touches in attack too, saw him in a new light. Frawley is not the organiser we were hoping for, but , you can see that he is a very dangerous line runner, and if we knew how to back up would have scored at least one tries from his breaks (he was the only one who made one all night)
There is no excuse for our established players (many of whom have been spouting on the website about how much they are looking forward to 'ripping in') for producing such an utterly lacklustre display AT HOME in the first game of the season. No go forward at all, and slow, plodding , wait for the attack to make a play defence. It was utterly shocking and they should be embarrassed to wear the shirt.

I always look at the defensive line speed first and foremost.
If it's good it means you are -
Dominating the ruck and are able to set your line before the oppo has time to play the ball.
Showing intent.
Showing energy.
Showing confidence (in yourself and those around you).
Showing confidence in your defensive structures.
There were lots of people calling for offside against Salford but the reality was that their line speed was so much better than ours that our fans could only get their head round it by seeing Salford as constantly offside. Our play the balls were so slow that by the times we looked up Salford were in our faces.
Salfords first 2 tries were well worked but by the time they got near our line they virtually just had to flop over it as our defence had backtracked so much.
To say the onus this season is to build on our defence we are miles away.
As you say, a lot of 'best pre season yet' stuff but it all depends on how well the other 11 teams pre-seasons have gone in relation to your.
Looks like Salfords has gone better than ours!
TBF though the loss of key players in the lead up to the game must have disrupted us but there was no excuse for some of the defence we had on show.
Lots for the coaches to think about this week and an early season wake up call.

Why is it acceptable to some that we play totally without energy , passion and any guts in front of our home fans. We lost the first game of the season without putting up so much as a whimper to a side many see as the whipping boys of the league, and it's ok because we lost the last 4 against them too?

It’s ok- it could be worse- we could have conceded 8 tries to London and had brough sent off.

| Salford actually went into the game targeting Turner, they know that he's a bit slow to get across and by sending Evalds at him it made overlaps time and time again, Farrell playing was a bonus for them.
I was hoping Frawley would step up and be the dominant half but was a bit disappointed that he just seemed to be a bit of a passenger, still time yet.
Tactically we did ourselves no favours, coming out of yardage we went one man up passing to the first man every time, Salford compacted their defence and went in hard and fast, we lost collision every time and couldn't get out of our own half. All it needed was to throw to second man out or send an option runner and it would have held their defensive line.
Anyone know why English didn't return in the second half?

whipping boys? salford have a strong team, but when the injuries hit them they will start to struggle, till then they will go well.
sure we was drawing 8-8 early in the second half, not too bad considering who we had out
get ready for another defeat at catalans next week

Salford has an advantage over many teams in that the preconceived opinions of us make teams sloppy. We will be whipping boys if we concede injuries in key positions. But to be honest, who wouldn't be?
You're right in that most fans and pundits have written us off before we even kicked a ball, and that's where the problem lies. We are not going to win the GF, but I'm pretty sure that we'll beat any team that approaches us with the same mentality that you assessed the outcome of this game.

I think the lesson of the weekend is don't underestimate Salford or London!
TBF I don't think the Giants took Salford lightly - we were just outplayed on the day.

| It's not the fact we were beaten that is the issue. I'ts the fact that we showed no fight whatsoever. I can also see warning signs coming from Woolford. In one interview he intimated that until it gets warmer we will be 'playing the conditions' which means sticking it up your jumper. Stone made exactly the same mistake, in thinking that just because it's cold you can't play rugby. Conditions were perfect on Friday for good rugby, there was no rain and the ground wasn't soft or churned up. Both Australian coaches have had us coming out of the blocks slowly because they have never played in British winter conditions before. Sure, if its absolutely pouring down you change your game plan, but there's no need to play the kind of predictable one out rubbish we served up just because it's cold and it's february!

One team that will not write Salford off is Hull KR.
Hugely impressive win at our place in the qualifiers what a wake up call you gave us. The spine of Evalds, Lui & Hastings is the best in Super League bar none. Signing former Robin Ken Sio hasn't done any harm either!
Salford are Super League's best kept secret no doubt. One victim down and counting.
