October 5th - Speaker - Martyn Sadler [editor, League Express]

The man with contacts in high places!

Martyn started by informing us that we should be thanking him for his recent actions. Martyn had phoned Steve McNamara and asked him to include 6 Giants players in the touring squad so that tonight's audience would be gentle on Martyn!

He went on to bemoan the fact that The Greatest Game has an abysmal record in promoting the sport. National media coverage was at its lowest since the 1895 split. The sport desperately needs someone who knows how to 'manipulate' the media.

It was as a result of Wakefield's - Martyn's team - famous victory in 1988 over the, at the time, unstoppable Wigan and the total lack of press coverage which sowed the seeds of RL League Express. Martyn realised that not only did supporters of the successful teams want to read about their heroes but fans from the less fashionable clubs did also. It took over 2 years of planning, and in 1990 the first League Express was published.

In closing, Mick Beevers thanked Martyn for an excellent evening's entertainment. Dave Calverley reminded the audience about the Curry Night [Thursday October 21st] and the urgency to let him know how many would be attending.

Curry Night

The Curry Night was an excellent evening. Those who went thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful meal at the Chutney Mahal.

Cardiff

If there is a sufficient response there will be a bus going to Cardiff just for the Saturday matches. Work on a price of around £25, but this will be confirmed once the trip is viable.

In response to those people who want to be members but cannot manage Tuesday evenings, we have decided to hold a 2nd meeting each month on Wednesday evenings.

The format will be.

Please note that January's meeting has been moved to the 2nd Tuesday.

Tuesday's Supporters meeting at Turnbridge WMC (7.30pm) which will see Damian McGrath the club's Head of Youth Performance talk about how the club is progressing at youth level. This is your chance to ask questions about the future of the club at youth level.

I have to give credit to the supporters association they have got some really good speakers going on. Well done.

Just a reminder that next Tuesday [1st February] Mick has organised Nigel Wood of the RFL to come along and speak to us. I’m sure there are many questions we would like to put to him!! Town are at home this night, so be wary of where you park otherwise the car park man might try and charge you. Stick to the club side.

Our first Wednesday meeting [16th February] will be a games evening. £1 per person to enter with the winner collecting a substantial monetary reward for his/her efforts! Bring along some guests so that we can have am all-action event!!

In the near future we will be honoured to have as our guest our Club Chairman, Ken Davy. I’m awaiting confirmation from Ken, but we have pencilled in the 3rd Wednesday in April. This will be an all ticket event limited to 75 attendees. Initially it will be open to members only. So if you are a member you have until the end of February to order your [free] ticket. After that they will go on sale to other supporters at a price of £2 [I’m sure a fellow committee person will correct me if I’m wrong with the price]. So, if you’re not a member why not join now for only a couple of pounds more than the cost of seeing Ken? Visit the website for an on-line or downloadable form.
