Griffin has bags of potential but was strangely ineffective for most of last season during his time with us. It was only towards the back end of the season that he started to show his ability, after a truly, truly dreadful first 9 or 10 games. He's definitely a player who needs first team experience at this stage in his career - far too good for Academy level, but not yet adjusted to the rigours of competing against experienced pros. Really hope he gets the opportunity to build up some SL experience with you guys this season - at this stage he desperately needs it if he's to progress.

32-18 to Batley.

A creditable performance. We spilled the ball on their line a couple of times. One immediate thought was that I was disappointed with the lack of game control from the Wood/McNally combination but then I remembered that they were playing behind smaller forwards. Not that Batley's forwards dominated, but they kept our lads in check [ireasonably[/i fairly comfortably.

However, don't get me wrong. The lads done well[!]. Lots of potential.

Only downsides were the awful turnout [850ish] and the poor ref. Let the game flow a bit too much in the offside department.

More perhaps after the Shoulder.

30-18

not a bad performance today from the younger lads

the few that stood out for me today were

molloy
wood
walker
orwell

alex brown had a field day on the wing for batley, young giants lad came on for injuried player (think it was dawson) on the wing and was totally out of his depth, brought off later in game.

The future is pretty bright for you if today is anything to go by. As I initially thought when I saw the side you were fielding, it was a good contest. Can't wait to see Greg Johnson in a Batley shirt, he reminds me very much of a young Jason Robinson. Also impressed that a number of your first-team stars turned up today, were signing autographs for the kids and were happy to have a chat.

We played alright, better than last year anyway.

Size was the biggest issue today; it really is men v lads and when Batley upped things at the back end of the the first half we couldn't match the physicality of them. I would also have liked us to have been a bit more expansive given they were bigger than us. Batley were more coherant, completed more sets and used their width a bit more but it's a credit to our lads that, had we taken a couple of opportunities we squandered with dropped ball on or over the line, we would have matched them for tries.

I think Batley will go well this season but I also think our U20's are in for a good year. No one really stood out for us today but Wardle made some very good tackles, timing his hits. Our #10 I liked the look of and Johnson, Fairbank did okay IMO and no one looked out of their depth at all. McNally was a bit too predictable with his passing but did show a couple of magic touches. Wood was, for me, slightly better and I think the loss of Carlisle didn't help in that department.

I saw at least half a dozen of our first teamers there today, probably more, and that is a great thing.

You're quite right, Johnson has the ability to beat most players on a one-on-one and we think he has huge potential. Strange you should mention Jason Robinson as similar comments have been made about him at Huddersfield. We hope he does well for you. Alex Brown didn't do too badly last season did he!

It was an entertaining contest; your extra class and experience saw you through. Two of your tries were outstanding.

Good luck for next season.
