| Quote: GIANT DAZ "My 1st was either Workington or Whitehaven in 87/88 (?)
After that we were introduced to Keith Burhouse who was the groundsman at the time by ex Fartowner Tony Johnson and for the next 2 seasons we worked on the ground - sweeping terraces, ball boy-ing, programme selling, turnstile operating and even scoreboard operating - then Bailey came and it went bad
Isn't it funny how selective some peoples memory can be.
John Bailey "came" in 1983, Keith Burhouse joined him as a volunteer helper on the grounds etc in 1984. In 1988 John Bailey gave away the club debt free to the Murphy/Shuttleworth/Collins consortium.
John Bailey came in 1983 as one of 8 Directors. They all left to look after their own businesses in the next 3 years and he soldiered on to keep the club alive (I will admit barely) until someone else could take over. He could have wound up the club but didn't. If it was not for John Bailey we could be in a position where we had no club to follow.
Please get facts straight before getting the digs in.

I wasnt arguing about what he did for the club Stuart i was meaning from a personal point of view as he decided that these 3 young kids who came up on a sunday morning to help make sure the games could go ahead etc and who's 'payment' was free entry into the game had to leave the ground when our work was done and queue up and pay like everyone else - needless to say we were a bit 'off' after that with Mr Bailey and decided that we would pay in future and he can get someone else in to do the crappy little jobs !!.
One game we actually missed the 1st 15 minutes becasue we were shovelling gravel into a hole at the side of the main stand to make it look nice fo rsome RFL inspectors - he still expected us to go out and pay then !

| I can't remember my first game but it would probably be around 1959/60, my father used to take me to watch both Fartown and Town . I'll never forget walking from Almondbury down Kilner bank across Leeds Road and over Canker Lane to Fartown then after the match afterwords we'd walk to Birkby to my grandmas who lived up Blacker Road for tea, after tea we'd walk back in to Town and then finally catch a bus back to Waterloo and walk back up home. The good old days eh ??? folk were as fit as butchers dogs in them days, I don't think todays kids could cope with all that walking we did.
If my memory serves me well the teams, more often than not were at home on alternate Saturdays.

| My first game would I believe been in 90/91 season when Fartown won the old third division?
Someone else will prob tell me this is wrong - my memory is real poor these days. Probably not helped by standing on the fartown terraces in the depths of winter - god it got cold!
Anyway - moved to West Yorks that season - and was invited along to a home game by a work colleague. Soon got hooked and have followed them home/away every game ever since.
I had only really seen RL on telly before - and only knew about teams like Wigan/Widnes/Featherstone etc... from watching occasional games on the box. No Sky TV when I were a lad.
You guys born and bred in West Yorks should think yourselves very fortunate - I grew up with only Torquay Utd or Brixham RUFC (yeah - who I hear you cry!) to watch.
Really glad I got to start watching at Fartown - and via Leeds Rd to the Galpharm. Been to some great grounds over the years - even enjoyed the eason we got relegated as opportunity to revisit some.
FARTOWN FOREVER NOW!!!

| 1947 - and though its a couple o months ago --I am pretty certain it was Warrington with a player playing called Harry Bath - I will try and confirm
Went with some lads in thee "top class" at junior school -who I knocked about with (they were 11 and dad trusted them to look after a 5 year old Ok --and they did !!--That was it
Even away games - we went up to town and went on a load of Hanson buses that left from the Square - and at Fartown -it was free admission
When you got to 11 - it had gone up to the old "threepenny bit" and inflation sent it later to "a tanner - 6 old pence - now a 5p coin!!"
When I reached 16 -- it rose to 1 shilling and tenpence (about 10 p now) and a programme was threepence - what subsequent governments have done to us eh??
Since then -- hooked and generally only miss games - now its Summer season - for annual hols
Back then in the Winter season it was usually only through "homework" / "illness"- or been grounded for something!!
But have seen em as a 11 year old lift the cup at wembley in coronation year !!--Lets hope they can do it again eh??
What a roller coaster ride its been!!
