There are medicals in rugby.
But medicals aren’t premonitions.

| Name me a rugby player who doesn’t have an injury history!
Brough has a dodgy ankle- but plays on. Robbo dodgy hips- played on for a long time.....
LOD had been an ever present at his previous club prior to joining us- we couldn’t get him out on the field.

What DJ Hudds is saying
Based on a players history and injuries you would expect there to be a closer look at the area.
Eg if I have had 3 knee injuries you would have detailed medical assessment as it suggests it will be a problem down the line.
With some of the players we have signed there are significant injuries but the extent of the medical s is a cursory examination which says the knee is fine today it is not injured.
Then after 6 weeks of training the knee goes .
What happens in football is they get an MRI they then go through exercise programme and are re examined. If that shows even a small flare up you would have an expert give a view on what happens next
It is called due diligence. The club does not appear to be doing that.
That is the reference to lack of medical. In some cases it may be worse with players from overseas where we rely on second hand information.

| I understand that- but there’s no magic ball that can determine what might happen down the line.
Even going through an exercise programme isn’t going to replicate these players hammering their bodies every week in training or the contact that occurs in a game.
Just one tackle could cause an issue, or they could be ok for another 10 years. There’s no way that a medical examination can give that information however thorough.
Uate has damaged his ankle- do we now not sign him?

| I would hope that the club has had a doctor with a suitable level of expertise check out Uate’s injury and provide advice.
If necessary, no we shouldn’t sign him - assuming we haven’t already signed him, which the Aussie press is now just reporting as a fact. .

| Well either DJHudds and Durham are right, or we are extraordinarily unlucky with our signings, Having said that i think half our team seem to be made of glass, especially the forwards, some of them seem to rarely get on the pitch and they are crocked, How long have we waited for Ferguson to come back and he's crocked again, that's just one man, We have plenty of them.
I know it's a tough game and all players pick up injuries sometime but two of our players who get as much criticism as anybody are Brough and Murphy, along with the likes of Jerry they put themselves about more than anyone else, Brough Tackles harder than most, Murphy runs the ball up with everything he has but both seem to get far less injuries than most.
Broughy probably heals while he is binned and banned.

| I'm sure going back a few years there was a "policy" of bringing durable players in, I.e players with a proven record of playing and not missing for injury - i think it may have been when Sharp was coach but could be wrong on that.. It's this that seems to have changed and is costing us. Yes all players are at risk of injury but some are more easily injured than others...we need to avoid these, but we seem to purposely go for these now...how many have we brought in already uhh injured?

This is something that is testable. It is either true or not.
Sports medicine is a fairly mainstream thing. Their will be plenty of academic papers that cover this topic. One would hope that the coaching staff are familiar with the latest research.

Some players will be more robust than others. Some heal quick some not so much. Sports medicine is mainstream- but not so much research pertaining to RL.
I have an ex colleague who did some research on behalf of the RFL when they were potentially looking at having regional academies. He was looking at preparation of the academy lads and how different approaches affected their fitness-robustness is very difficult to measure due to all the external factors.
Woolford and Andrews seem to think that the injuries we’ve had in the last few years have been down to poor preseason preparation.
We didn’t replace Greg Brown (well we did, but the guy left when the club wouldn’t take on board things as he suggested- such as buying and wearing specific footwear for doing weights etc, he left after a very short time). We had a rookie doing it since-and we’ve had a lot of injuries since. Coincidence? Perhaps.
