Some vintage footage I found on youtube of the classic Fartown game from 1981. Once you've watched this there's another 8 parts to watch. How much hammer did Tony Johnson get!!!!

Tony was the guy who got me into Fartown and he told us about this and how he ached for weeks after !!

Bit different to todays game - half of those challenges would be 10 match bans today

im sure a guy who i work with said TJ had to come off after 50 odd minutes such was the battering he took from dirty wigan!

That is racism on the pitch IMO. Thank God those days are gone, from that perspective at least. Some of the skill and minerals on show however, well, that stuff is timeless.

This was a game that as featured on ITV on a monday night when they showed RL.

The commentator said after the first two tackles on Tony Johnson,

''For all the viewers who have tuned in this is RL and although it seems like Pot Black at the minute''.

One of the best and dirtiest games i ever saw at Fartown.

I like the end.

If i remember right. 6 players sent off Glen Knight and Steve Lyons for Hudds cannot remember the other one. Giants won 9 points to 8 with George Fairburn for wigan missing a penalty about two minutes from the end. It was an easyish kick for fairburn who was a GB international and one of the best kickers in the game at that time.

The videos do not do justice to how bad that game was. as i recall Tony Johnson was given really bad head high tackles twice in the first 10 minutes and i mean head high pure coat hangers. there were fights every five minutes throughout the game.

Tony johnson was a fabulous player at the time and his speciality was catching the ball opn a short KO. the number of times he did that was amazing it was tactic we used quite a lot, none of this get distance on the KO mullarkey. He used to leap like a gazelle to catch the ball, he must have been an ex basketball player or something. His natural spring and athleticism was brilliant.

Ha , ha should have listened to it with sound on. Just goes to show your memory can play tricks with you.

RL was a much dirtier game in those days, contested scrums and being able to hook at the PTB led to a lot of confrontations.. red hall would have had to have been open as long as tescos in those days to deal with everything.

Yes Jimmy Johnson was sent off. He was our go to guy for a scrap in those days him and Steve Lyons.

Graham Swale was a winger then , went on to be a loose forward / hooker i think and was probably the dirtiest player to wear the C&G i can remember. ( a true hero in my eyes though

)

We had a few hero's Jimmy Johnson, Dennis Fitzpatrick, Swazza, Frank Simpson, Joe and Tom Nadiole, Gary Senior to name a few, all could handle themselves

saw his lad,mark in town a few weeks back and he recognised me from when we were youths and his dad used to take us to fartown to sweep the terraces,had a right good chat we did,think mark was only about 8 at the time im sure daz will remember?

TJ is alive and well --in the constabulaire --and as fit as a dog on best steak!!

and despite the hammer he got -- a more laid back and friendly fella you`ll never meet !!

Not sure about that? I've worked at David Browns for the last 30 years and I can't remember him working there but I might be wrong? His brother has always worked there in the Hardening Department and still does to this day.
