Huddersfield Giants - "We know our place": |
|
| Quote: Hangerman2 "We have only had two quality coaches, Nathan Brown and Tony Smith. Look what Tony is now doing with Hull once he is starting to put him stamp on the side. Hoy and Clifford are quality and run the show. I said earlier in the year that we have the second worst spine in superleague, and i fully stick by it, we are truly woeful with the ball. Connor and Lolohea do exactly the same job. We have too many chiefs and not enough indians, and the chiefs we have are all the same ilk, slow with decent distribution, but who are they distributing to?! We have ZERO proven tryscorers amongst the wingers and clearly this is a year too far for Jerry. It would be forgivable if this was a side Watson inherited (Like Smith and Hull) and he was transitioning but is absolutely is not.
As for coaching, last year there were a few set moves which worked for the early part of the year, once sides got wise to them we could not score for love nor money. Since then there has been ZERO development in attacking shape. Every side i have watched this year have exposed Hurrell in defence due to his poor mobility, we didn't attempt to do that even once, not that we have the players to do it anyway.
His signings this year have all been truly woeful, barring Naiqama, who would look much better with better service
Can't argue with any of that. I've read a lot times that "on paper Huddersfield have their strongest squad for years" but I just can't see it myself.

| C'mon Ken. I hate to say i told you so, but i told you so. Best players all leaving, 9th best team in the league with joint 3rd spend. Can't win a game at home and playing boring process driven game that no players or fans want to watch/play.
With the kind of funding he has been given it should have been elementary my dear Watson, but he is in way over his head and was obviously lucky with whoever was really pulling the strings at Salford while he was there (look how is is continuing on a shoestring)
To quote labour 'isn't it time for a change?'

| The biggest mystery for me is not why I Watson gets away with it after what he has achieved in his time at the club ( with the money made available to him ) The mystery for me is why Mr Davy keeps going. He could have gone to almost any other S league club and had many time as much success for his money.
There is one thing that is blatantly obvious and that is , building a good league side is not just about throwing money at it , the success of other clubs on far less money shows that and its not just about the coach either, Though i believe that is the single most important thing. There is a whole feeling about the club that says looser, Mr Davy has gone to enormous lengths to try to make a good club but all his money and all his effort has proved to be not enough to get the fans to turn up and watch . My advice is to forget about signing the big name players like Burgess ( who will be expected to transform us into a good side) We have been down that road many times right back to the Scofield days. Yes we do need good players and Star players but the most important thing for me is to have the right people in the right places off the field first and it doesn't strike me as being a club with that.
I watson would not have lasted a half of what he has at the giants at some clubs because they do not accept mediocrity , when things look like they are starting to go wrong they do something about it very quickly whether it be coach or a mistake in signed players or backroom staff they get on with putting things right. the giants are far more likely to go out and sign another big name player and expect that to bring the fans rolling back. For me the coach is the key man and we have the wrong one, he may well work at another club i don't know but he is not working at Fartown, We are no better than when he came for all his talk. If Mr Davy can't see that then we are destined to be forever bottom feeders.

| I have no great knowledge of the workings of the club but outside looking in it seems to me the club needs a big overhaul behind the scenes with a big injection of enthusiasm and rugby knowledge at the top. I also wonder if Mr Davy has been as patient with underperformance in his “real” business? There is a declining interest and enthusiasm amongst supporters, and there needs to be a big regeneration to have any hope of rebuilding the support base. The stadium doesn’t help as it’s far too big but the real frustration is with the performances from a squad that I keep reading is the 3rd most expensive in the league and we now see probably our best 2 players this year are leaving. Lost count but is this year 3 or 4 under Watson? Either way we are no nearer being a regular at the top and numbers attending are dropping. I see odd comments from opposition supporters that Huddersfield don’t bring anything to Super League and at the moment I have to agree. Home game this week against Hull who are really struggling so if we don’t win - and that is no disrespect to Hull it’s just based on their season so far- then we really are in trouble. I have never felt less enthusiasm for going to games than the last couple of seasons. I’m not really sure who is pulling the strings at the club but in my view it needs a shake up and quick!

Have to agree with you, it's clear the backroom and executive staff are subpar at Huddersfield. The coaches change, but except for two very good ones (Brown and Smith) throwing money at it doesn't have an impact. How much say others have in signings i don't know, but we seem very very poor at identifying talent, especially from overseas. Where some clubs (Salford and Leigh spring to mind) make very astute signings who prove to be great players, we are the opposite, we spend a lot on underperformers. It is also telling that players and coaches with ambition tend to head off quickly, we couldn;t keep Brown or Smith here long, and same for our better players. The whole attitude of the club is defeatist, and you are right it needs an overhaul. I don;t think there will be one though, as Ken seems to accept 2nd or even 3rd best in all regards for his money.
I've stopped watching and only look for results a while after matches now and i wont watch again until Watson is gone as i'm tired of hearing him make excuses and make bad signings. I wouldn't have resigned Lolohea as he is now past his best and coasting and i certainly wouldn't have paid the kind of money they will have paid to get Burgess here next year. It's more really bad business acumen, so strange that a selfmade man like Mr Davy allows it,

| We have signed some good oversea players over the years, but more recently, they have been injury prone or not performed too well. I look back at Brad Drew, Whatuwra, Elford, Hodgson, Chan, Faalogo, Faiumu, Jenson with great memories. I think it is more difficult recruiting from the NRL, but tend to agree we struggle compared to other teams. I also feel we don't always get the best out of signings, like Salford, Leigh for example.
