Thaler had nothing to do with it, in fact the game was pretty good to watch as a neutral as it was free flowing game with minimum penalties. The penalties that were given were rightly given.
Can't really win the Ref's. Thaler let the game flow last night and gets pinged on here for not giving penalties and other weeks gives all the penalties and then gets called whistle happy. I would rather it be like last night and allow the game to flow its a much better spectacle.
The only real dubious decision was the webster sin binning, which he got wrong. You could argue brough was a red card but at that stage of the game red/yellow didnt really matter.'"
Agreed, Webster decision was a very poor one and Brough's was deserved.
Regarding your previous points, a penalty is a penalty, the ref isn't there to minimise them, he's there to uphold the laws of the game. And that is why they 'can't win' because as you have stated they have no consistency from one week to the next.
I think Thaler has grown to be possibly the best ref over the last couple of seasons, but he was poor last night, and unfortunately back to his centre of attention days when proudly dishing the yellow cards with maximum theatre. I think there were poor decisions against both teams, and unfortunately pretty key ones. He didn't lose us the game, but both sides are arguing over who was worse done to, not whether he was good or bad, which says enough about his overall performance really.
