| Hi guys, I know there's already a few topics on this, but most of them are either focusing on just the drop goal or just Ferres and I'd like to put forward what I think on more than just these two things.
Yesterday was an improvement in performance for me, I thought our outside backs played very well and at least matched Saints' which without our best centre is very impressive. I thought over the course of the game the forward battle was very even and except for a few short spells for either side, field position was only really won on the back of penalties, on balance I thought we just shaded it and if you played that game 10 times we would have won six and saints won four. Unfortunately it turned out to be one of those four times.
The drop goal... I thought and still think it was over, all giants fans will agree with me, all saints fans will disagree. It looks like most neutrals think it was a goal, but how much of that is just not wanting saints to win we'll never know. It should have gone to the video ref and I think with one angle showing goal and one not, I believe you are supposed to give benefit of the doubt to the attacking team. For me the whole thing is a bit of a red herring for the penalty we weren't given in the last second for a voluntary tackle anyway.
Ferres, stupid, stupid man. Always a red and I expect a four game ban minimum, although to be honest I think it should be more. This season I think he's looked lazy in defence and as good a player as he is, if he isn't putting in his all for as long as he's on the pitch it's time to give someone else a shot anyway. One thing I will say in his defence is that despite what saints fans are saying about it being the worst tackle ever in any sport and the worst thing to happen since Hitler marched into the Rhineland, he didn't drive Lomax in to the ground intentionally, he turned him upside down, lost control and fell over himself. That doesn't make it any less dangerous, but maybe means he won't be getting a record ban.
Finally Referees. I don't know about anyone else, but I get a bad feeling every time Bentham referees us. Certainly in the big games I never expect us to win when he's in charge. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I would like to see some statistics of our win percentage when he is the ref and when others are. So far this season has, in my opinion been dominated by the refereeing. Much in the same way that games refereed by Ganson were often dominated by him when he took the the field, is it surprising that this is the case now he has his hands on every match rather than just one a week. Bentham was poor yesterday, he's been poor before and will be poor again, as will all referees, but the frequency with which they are being poor lately is worrying. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the past but in my opinion in the last year or so (since ganson became head of the referees) the standard has become noticably worse with many more high profile mistakes.
Sorry for the rant.
