SUMMER BASH DAY ONE ROUND-UP!

In these darkest of days for The Trotters, Jimmy welcomed all to Blackpudlia with open Armstrongs. As a late regular customer of Bongser’s gaffe, Jimmy was also enumerating the attenders for yours truly with a clicker concealed in his left bronze hand.

First up was the clash of the invading parvenus. The Tools had the chance to halve the gap at the top of the Champ to two points but The Trannies made Toulouse their Blackpool Pleasure Bitch. A 56 point mismatch wherein, after a 2pt start, Toulouse donned a collective “Kill Me Kwik” hat and shipped 22 unanswered points in a mere quarter of an hour. So anxious were said French gourmands to sample the gastronomie of the far-flungedly fabled Fylde fried feeesh ‘n’ frites.

Five points to 8 of us. Pubbers & Bongser were a full sixteen out on the margin – and that was as good as it got. Atomic, “Harry” to his close ones, chose not to “Run with The Pack.” Wonder if Canoeman was at Bloomfield?

Onto the preds for ‘Dale vs Swinny.

For this match it was thine host that dared to be different – Bongser doesn’t copy, Chuck. Tempted to go for the all elusive draw, Bongser went for the almost narrowest of margin to The Hairnets. Swinny went 6-0 up before ‘Dale levelled and then went 12-6 ahead. Swinny pulled it back to 12-10 and Bongser was expecting a Wild Mouse Ride. So it proved to be! Rochdale pulled away and by HT were 24-10 up. But within two minutes of the restart Swinny revealed that they’d taken up the “ride-again” option and breached the ‘Dale defence. A second conversion went begging though and four minutes later The ‘Nets had both restored and extended their lead: 30-14.

Two tries in two minutes from The Swine and all began to unravel in this corner! One more missed kick though!! 30-26 at the three-quarter mark. If Swinny had had a Ridy, they’d've been ahead. Soon they were! 32-30 (bang-on margin to EVVO) but the try was converted (bang-on to Chayders). Then Swinny hit the forty mark and the wheels had well and truly come off Bongser’s Blackpool Belle. A margin of 10 was confirmed and therefore showed that a good night’s sleep at Ribby Hall beats a Blackpool B&B! 15 points to Charlie, diggory-squat to this party, 5 points apiece to all else. No Tower Cornets for The Hairnets.

After two games, the running total on the points: 126! Bongser’s prediction on The Bulls’ forum of a total tally of 291 points for the weekend was beginning to look a little undernourished!

Featherstone vs City Knights seemed another close one to call. This time only Pubbers & Vanners went for York. Most of the speculated margins were tight, though Chazzer & ‘Tommers stuck out their brass necks and went for Fev by fourteen. The match started testily with a quarter of it gone before Fev broke through. By then though, all the candy floss that The Knights had gorged on had started to weigh fluffy on their tummies and, in the last quarter, Fev were able to take their foot off the accelerator of the dodgems to allow York to avoid a nilling. 42-10 meant five for seven and Pokemons still on for five of the nine walkers....

Last up on Day One was The Bulls vs ‘Fax. Seven going Bradford, Pubbers & Vanners again dissenting – second time lucky? First half saw a slender Bulls lead after a ding dong do. Would they successfully negotiate a second half tightrope walk? Nope in trumps! After the previous night on The Blob in Yates’s, they bombed without a safety net, nilled and biting the sawdust (mixed with lion & hefflelump pooh). Second time lucky indeed for Pubs & Vans with the late drop goal taking a correct margin away from the former and presenting the extra 10 to the latter.

No chance left for any pokemon this week folks. Leigh down to sixth in the table with a toughie to come. 213 points in play for the day. Bongser still awaits Jimmy’s scores on the doors for Day One. Lily the Pink and Vancouver Leyther, on 25 each, are uncomfortable bedfellows at the top of The Tower tonight! Goodnight.
